Sloan Named Superintendent of Louisiana Colony and Training School
Dr William Sloan was named superintendent of the State Colony and Training School at Pineville by the board of the department of institutions meeting at Louisiana Training Institute. The board unanimously voted to replace Dr William P Hurder who resigned January 17 with Sloan who had been acting superintendent. Dr Edward T Grant discussed the department budget noting Angola would run $175000 in the red for the year ending June 30 1957 and said allocations would not meet expenditures due to more prisoners and other factors. Grant highlighted deficits in other institutions due to 1956 legislative cuts and urged quick operation of De Quincy after July 1 subject to a working budget. D A Dobbins estimated crime and law enforcement costs at $25500000 for 1955, about $8.75 per year per person.
