A federal judge extended for 10 days an order restraining railroad unions from striking and trains from lockouts, delaying a threatened nationwide railroad shutdown. Negotiations collapsed in Miami Beach, with officials noting the impasse and White House consideration of further action.
Israeli jets resumed attacks on Egyptian military targets along the Suez Canal in retaliation for the prior downing of an Israeli aircraft in a similar raid in Beirut. The strike hit targets on the southern sector of the canal, as stated by the Israeli military command. Lebanese Interior Minister Kamal Jumblatt warned that Middle East violence would rise in the next two months after meetings in Cairo with Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser. He urged Arab nations to join the fight against Israel, while Iraq’s Interior Minister said Baghdad cannot deploy all forces against Israel due to Kurdish rebellions and Iranian troop movements.
