Prominent Chemist Fatally Injured En Route to Wilmington

A B Miller Hercules Powder chemist was found dead near railroad tracks in Tuscaloosa Alabama after illness in Hattiesburg Mississippi. He was en route to Wilmington from Hattiesburg where he worked at the company's experimental station. Surviving are wife Hazel and two sons Don and Hugh.

Prisoner status listed for Eighth Naval District men in China

The Navy reports 239 men from the Eighth district serving in China are presumed prisoners of war after the December 7 attack on Pacific island outposts. Of these, 34 are civilian employees. total civilians presumed captured reach 1,200. Stimson Foresees Broad U S Offensive Against Axis

Secretary of War Stimson warned in Washington that the nation should expect attacks along coasts and other areas as submarines struck the Netherlands Caribbean island Aruba. He urged readiness against public pressure to scatter defenses and pledged urgent preparations for offense, citing a surge of 90 441 volunteers in January as proof the army will surge to victory.

Bills push to raise soldiers' pay and family allowances

Senator Johnson proposes increasing base pay for enlisted men from 21 to 42 dollars a month and a sliding scale for officers. Representative Edmiston backs an allotment system requiring at least 15 dollars monthly sent to dependents, with 15 dollars more from the government. British Forces Sweep Eastern Mediterranean Campaign

British warships and planes completed a four day sweep in the eastern Mediterranean damaging two cruisers and a destroyer and destroying five axis warplanes. Two British merchant ships were set afire and later sunk while another freighter suffered superficial damage. The action ranged from Malta to Alexandria and into the Ionian Sea with heavy air attacks paused only by escort vessels’ heavy anti aircraft fire. The German dive bomber attack on February 14 struck our ship afterdeck killing no one aboard.

F B I Seizes Over 250 Enemy Aliens in California Raids

Federal agents raided five counties in California and arrested more than 250 enemy aliens, mostly Japanese. In Santa Maria, more than 200 Japanese were taken, with guns radios and cameras seized. other raids reached Santa Barbara and Yolo Yuba and Placer counties. Hartwig Reese a German artist was also seized in San Francisco amid discovery of Nazi items.

Man Fatally Burned While Lighting Gas Fire

James Andrew Foster 54 of 202 Egan street died from severe burns after his clothing caught fire while lighting the Neeley residence gas fire early Thursday. He was taken to a clinic where he died. Funeral arrangements planned for Decatur Alabama, with Mulhearn Funeral Home in charge. He leaves his mother Mrs. Alice Foster sister Mrs. Neeley brother George W. Foster and nephew Louis Black now at Camp Claiborne.

Clerk subdues armed robber with bottle in Pasadena

In Pasadena on February 19 Emmett Quinn, a drug store clerk, reports felling a would be robber with a whisky bottle after the suspect warned of a holdup and waved an unloaded pistol. The gun was examined and found to hold five cartridges. The bleeding suspect was jailed.

Senate panel votes to repeal congressmen pension law

Senate civil service committee votes 4 2 to send repeal of the pension law for Congress to the floor. The measure would remove Congress the president and vice president and cabinet members from participation in the civil service retirement system and require repayment of any past payments within thirty days. The vote comes as house panel also begins consideration of repeal amid opposition from government employee unions.

Britain to Launch 2 New Battleships

In London reports say the 35 000 ton battleships Anson and Howe of the King George V class will join the fleet soon. Churchill pledged royal navy reinforcement before Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. Anson and Howe, launched in 1940 and 1939 respectively, may be at sea or in trials.
