Liner President Harding aided a drifting freighter after its rudder failed, leaving the ship at risk off Cape Race. The vessel reported a radio message as salvage teams prepared to steer toward West African ports.
Swollen Amite River recedes as Baton Rouge Hammond road remains shut due to flooding. Bridge expected to reopen today while Port Vincent road stays covered and Jefferson Highway west of the Mississippi experiences shallow floodwater. No crop damage reported.
Colonel Lindbergh arrives in Miami ending his air mail voyage to Central America with a mail cargo aboard. He is accompanied by Col. John Hambleton and Postmaster Pittman of Miami as they pose with Lindbergh.
Arrangements advance for a Gipsy Smith revival at First Presbyterian Church starting March 17 in a large tent. Rev. Marion S. Monk lauds Smith as the greatest living evangelist while Dr. J E Purcell calls him the leading evangelist in the nation. Committees and leaders are named as preparations proceed for daily talks beginning March 20.
Associated Press reports thawing Europe faces flood danger as weeks of ice and snow melt into rivers. Central Europe endures fierce snow storms. Scandinavia suffers severe ice. Balkans endure winter suffering. Denmark halts rail traffic. Danzig has 110 ships trapped. a Venice sergeant dies and two soldiers are wounded. a Berlin gas tank explodes injuring five.
Fred Stone the comedian has laid aside his crutches permanently after a serious airplane accident. Rex Beach, his host in Sebring, announced this today after a golf outing with Stone and local pro George B. Smith, noting Stone’s nine hole score was impressive.
Gene Tunney and his wife travel from the Riviera to Rome for a week at the Hotel Rossi where they wed last October. They left Cannes to escape a cold wave and were followed by Dr. John Oliver LaGorce, editor from Scranton, Pa., and Mrs. LaGorce who joined them at Cannes.
Louisiana will divide into 12 districts to run 4-H summer camps. District 10 includes West Carroll Richland Morehouse Franklin Caldwell and Ouachita parishes. Each district must raise 1250 within a year, with LSU adding 250. An additional 1250 may follow within two years.
Plans are under way for a March 9 meeting of the North Louisiana Commercial Teachers Association in which Alice Louise Smith of Ouachita Parish High School serves as secretary. C W Rhoads of Centenary College will preside, with Dr James B Trant addressing on Commercial Education as Preparation for College and for Business. Floyd J Andrus of Eunice High School will discuss Problems of the Commercial Teacher and Their Solution. Eleanor Lee Crigler of Southwestern Institute will speak on Commercial Occupations.
The district will receive state aid totaling 250 and the title to the 4-H camps will be vested in the Louisiana 4-H clubs under LSU agricultural extension. Plans for the district will be announced soon with details available from E. R. Strahan or Mrs. Jewell McQuiller, farm and home parish demonstration agents.
