Paris reports Premier Clemenceau was shot as he entered his car and wounded in the chest and shoulder though not seriously. A policeman was punched in the eye during the incident, and Clemenceau reportedly grappled with the would-be assassin as authorities assessed the danger and possible consequences.
Georges Clemenceau barely survived a gun attack in Paris as he prepared to ride in an automobile. Five shots were fired. one struck his shoulder while he remained able to move and return to his home. The would be assailant, Emil Fotting, twenty five, born Creil, living Montrose Quatre, is thought Russian. The premier was en route to a conference with Colonel Ovse and Mr Balfour about negotiations and an early treaty.
Texas Representative Mack told the House judiciary committee that cotton producers are losing heavily due to the embargo on exports. He argued Britain is buying cotton below normal prices and profiting, and that with the emergency passed the embargo should be rescinded. The panel sent the resolution to the War Trade Board for comment.
London report says Esthenian troops retreated before Bolsheviki forces in the region of Pskov, official statement indicates.
Basel Feb 19 The German armistice commission will in future be under the control of the foreign office according to an unofficial Berlin dispatch.
In Nogales on February 19 a band of several hundred Yaguai Indians were defeated by Mexican Federal soldiers in a clash near Ide Iborregon, Sonora, about forty miles south of Nogales.
Chesley R Perry of Chicago secretary of the International Association of Rotary Clubs of America attends the 1914 Rotary conference in Alexandria Louisiana and is hosted by Monroe Rotary Club. He joins a luncheon and will be guest of honor at a six o'clock dinner hosted by the Monroe Rotary Board of Directors.
Dr. R J Pirkey a Baptist pastor and former army chaplain assumes leadership of the First Baptist Church. He served as staff chaplain in the Panama Canal Zone and organized church work there. He has a law and journalism background and led Liberty Loan Red Cross and War Work drives before preaching in Texas and on the Isthmus.
Frank J. Roddy, head of the Monroe Fire Department, is honored with a gold pendant medal from local fire insurance representatives. The gesture celebrates his 1918 record showing fire losses of $8,288.75, the lowest in the parish, and lauds his department’s prompt responses and 365 active days of service.
Paris February 19. The Jugo Slav claims for Adriatic eastern shore were before the Supreme Council of the Peace Conference. It was tentatively decided they should be referred to a commission, which also handles Romanian demands.
Mr and Mrs Louis J Gimler mourn the death of their infant son Freneis Joseph at age five weeks. The brief illness ended this afternoon as the child was brought into the heavenly home where faith and hope endure for grieving parents and family.
Wireless dispatches from the George Washington report the ship is making good speed toward Boston. It may reach the harbor Sunday night, allowing President Wilson to remain aboard and deliver an address in Boston Monday morning.
Advices from Berlin via Bijel report the Pan German military party led by Field Marshal von Hindenburg bitterly resents the armistice clauses. They object to limiting the German army to police force strength, to the control of ammunition factories, and to Germany paying the Allied occupation expenses on the Rhine.
William Howard Taft will rejoin Yale University next fall as a member of the faculty, announced today. Taft had left his professorship of law to serve in wartime duties.
London reports Capt. von Helew naval delegate on the German armistice commission has resigned. The announced reason is that his negotiations with Mathias Erzberger, chairman of the commission, had disastrous consequences.
Washington February 19. Secretary Daniels ordered court martial trials for two naval officers over bribery and graft in the third naval district. Sufficient evidence warrants trials. one case involves a $1000 bribe for passing an ineligible applicant and another a $500 bribe to secure a detail permit allowing the applicant to stay at home.
Vienna February 19 President Zeite declared the German Austrian republic firmly established and the Habsburg dynasty a thing of the past in a speech. He said abdication would be demanded from former Emperor Charles who had withdrawn from government without abdication.
The Monroe Rotary Club hosted Chesley R. Perry editor of The Rotarian at a noon meeting to hear his overview of Rotary. He traced the organization's 15 year history from four founders in Chicago to 40 000 members and 250 clubs worldwide and urged attendance at tonight's directors dinner at Leon's.
