Brother union members respond to President Wilson’s appeal to end the carpenters strike. The pause allows talks to resume as negotiators work toward a settlement and restoration of work for craftsmen.
John Rice announces the carpenters strike in Atlantic shipyards on government contracts has ended. Three thousand men resume work this morning with more expected to return tomorrow as President Wilson seeks a Wage Adjustment Board settlement.
President Wilson telegraphed William L. Stutcheson general president of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners that there is nothing to be gained by avoiding a personal talk about the strike. He insists the nation must exhaust all other adjustment methods before any right to strike is exercised.
The president warns that not acting on this principle amounts to aiding the enemy. His message responded to Hutcheson, who said he failed to reach an understanding with officials of the Shipping Board yesterday.
Ouachita Parish records show Standard Oil Company of Louisiana obtaining many oil and gas leases west of Cheniere and around the Cheniere brake. Some leases originated with attorney W B Clarke and were reassigned to Standard Oil. About 400 acres were leased to Clarke by the Ouachita Parish School Board near Center Point schoolhouse.
