Washington February 17 Critics question the feasibility and scope of Roosevelt's civilian labor conscription plan endorsed by labor and commerce sections. Admiral Land champions rapid national mobilization arguing for full production for war despite civilizational strains.
OPA agents announced the arrest of three San Francisco men Howard Freeman said Russell Youmans Arthur Greier and Percy Newford were booked for investigation into illegal gasoline sales totaling about 3 000 000 gallons. Youmans allegedly controlled ration books and planned to supply tickets through a board member. An informant led agents to a service station case ongoing.
Gov Thomas E Dewey told a New York State Association convention that local problems must be solved locally by state action and not by the national government He argued towns have done much in the last decade to return power to the people and restore confidence in government He urged state governments to keep their own house in order to build public trust.
May Head School Colonel Blake R Van Leer age 50 now duties in Washington heads engineer officer candidate training for the army and is considered as successor to President Martin Luther Brittain of Georgia Tech Chancellor V Sanford says he will recommend Van Leer for the post after the Atlanta Constitution reports Brittain 77 plans July 1 retirement Sanford would also recommend Brittain named president emeritus at an adequate salary.
Louisiana gubernatorial candidate Lewis L. Morgan said on statewide radio that he would dedicate charity hospitals to the public, denounce using office power to close major institutions, and push a tax funded education system relying on mineral royalties. He pledged civil service protections and adherence to Huey P. Long policies.
President Roosevelt reportedly told congressional leaders he plans to veto the new tax bill, saying it would not raise enough revenue. Shreveport, La. Feb. 17. Representative Overton Brooks of the Fourth district will stay neutral in the Louisiana gubernatorial election. Harry V. Booth, a Shreveport attorney and Morgan administration ally, said Brooks told him he would not return to Louisiana to campaign and would stay in Washington during the congressional session.
