Talks surrounding President Wilsons campaign strategy for the fall election are under discussion as parties prepare for upcoming political contests. Analysts expect emphasis on policy proposals and voter mobilization efforts ahead of the fall campaign season.
Washington reports a renewed question of whether President Wilson will stump for Democratic issues in the coming campaign. Governors Glynn and McCombs urged involvement, but Wilson remains inclined to stay out though not yet definitively. Earlier presidents’ stumping varied, with Morrison the first post Civil War example and Taft closer to campaign speeches than any since.
The City Council approved two ordinances after last night's session. One bans parking of automobiles and cabs on Grand and DeSiard streets to ease traffic blocks. The second forbids auto drivers from passing a streetcar when passengers are alighting.
Mr. T. S. Neal advertising manager of the Shreveport Journal and Mr. W. A. Barfield also connected with the Journal are business visitors to the city today and called at The News- Sta office. Mr. Sam Walker underwent a serious operation at St. Francis Sanitarium this morning and was on the operating table nearly three hours. He had not yet come out from the effects of ether at 1 o'clock. Miss Pauline Kahn was operated on for appendicitis late yesterday evening and was reported better this morning.
President Wilson plans to veto the Barnett immigration bill if it reaches him with the literacy test included. Senate committee leaders expect passage, but close friends doubt the bill becoming law. The president opposes literacy as a character test and favors other methods to curb undesirable entrants.
The river packet Queen City carrying 110 passengers including many women struck a pier at the head of the Ohio Falls opposite Louisville while en route from Pittsburgh to New Orleans on a Mardi Gras excursion. Lifesavers removed frightened passengers from the rails and all were taken off safely.
A blaze gutted an oil house and destroyed a warehouse and tanks at the Gay Off company. Fire crews fought the flames but the structure and contents were severely damaged. No injuries were reported as investigators examine the scene for a cause.
A large oil warehouse on Olive Street between Ninth and Tenta Streets burned last night causing about 3000 dollars in losses. Henry Liebreich of the fire department was overcome by hot gas but recovered. a kerosene tank car added to the commotion, while coal stored nearby was damaged and rails warped by the heat. Origin of the fire remains unknown. Insurance ad at end.
The Weather Bureau says the cold wave gripping the East will loosen as a milder pattern returns by week’s end. Mr. and Mrs. J. Baer and Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Bloch are two weeks in Hot Springs.

About fifty masked men halted a Illinois Central passenger train at Love Station Mississippi and forced Sheriff E F Nichols to surrender Johnson McGuirk and Bill Phillips. McGuirk was hanged from a railroad trestle while Phillips was returned to Nichols. Ingram, shot three weeks earlier, remains in a Memphis hospital in precarious condition. Nichols escorted his prisoner to Hernando later as the mob dispersed.
An informal meeting at the Chamber of Commerce discussed liquidating about 1100 dollars owed by the Monroe Fair Association, most owed to out of town exhibitors. President H. D. Apgar and treasurer O. B. Morton will collect funds Thursday and Friday with banks and local businesses expected to contribute to wipe out the debt before plans for the 1914 fair.
The Millsaps & Co Ltd charter expired in January and a reorganization is underway. Key shareholders Uriah Millsaps T B Millsaps J T Ellis and the Monroe Hardware Company Ltd have purchased all outstanding stock. A new charter will be published soon and the firm will continue its liberal west side business approach with officers to be announced.
Miss Mabel Boardman told the Senate commerce committee that the Mississippi must be kept from becoming a national sorrow like the yellow river. She urged flood control and cited four million dollars spent in six years for relief along the Mississippi and Ohio.
