Matamoros falls to Mexican Rebels with minimal resistance at 5 this morning, as fighting continues in Mexico City and across the border. Matamoros seizure follows local shifts in allegiance and relief moves by Gen. Diaz and Gen. Diez amid U.S. calls for peace.
From Mexico City reports say hostilities resumed at dawn with General Felix Diez and his followers holding the arsenal and other strategic positions. Federal batteries returned fire in a reciprocal, shot for shot exchange.
Washington reports Mexico City is virtually cut off from the outside world as iron shuttered censorship limits dispatches. Only one official message from Ambassador Wilson says fighting has resumed and the armistice is broken. Officials await definite results while the embassy relies on Associated Press for updates.
President Taft’s reply to President Madero’s appeal to withhold American intervention in Mexico was made public by Secretary Knox. Taft says Madero was misinformed about U S intentions and stresses friendship and relations between the two nations.
Washington February 17 Senator Cullom chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee after a brief talk with President Taft at the White House declared he remained opposed to intervention and that there was little sentiment for it in the Senate.
