A wall hole in Manila within the Tomas internment camp fed hundreds of internees for three years. Luis de Alcuaz, a chemistry professor and university official, ran the covert smuggling ring passing food and medicines through a concealed gap. Guards validated with three knocks then received supplies via filing cabinets.
War Department lists 1,835 US soldiers killed in action in Europe. Included from Louisiana are Pfc. Willis E and Mrs Velma L J of Winnfield. Sgt. William E and Mrs Didie smith of Route 1 Box 724. Names reflect hometowns and next of kin.

MacArthur reported that a large main Japanese garrison of over 20 000 men in Manila planned a major defense of the city and bay. The enemy expected attacks from the south and Manila Bay, but rapid envelopment by Allied forces disrupted their plans.
In Bedford township near Detroit a 43-year-old mother, Ida Kent, a war worker's wife and Bible class teacher, was bludgeoned with a frying pan and stabbed in the kitchen of her home. Police report the weapon was broken, a $5 bill found, no sign of rape, and an initial account by her son changed after police arrived. Franklin Kent, husband, worked at a factory. son Elven, 16, initially found her body, later recanted. son Arven, 18, is at a Mississippi army camp.
New York February 16 five crew members were missing after a Superfortress wrecked in Flushing Bay during an emergency landing attempt. Pilot Maj Billy Southworth Jr son of St Louis Cardinals manager was among the missing. four other crew members named were First Lt Carl Magee co pilot Las Vegas Nevada First Lt Martin Li Cursi Hulberton New York Second Lt Ralph Lewis Stickle Butler New Jersey S/Sgt Joseph Yabrodi New York City Coast guard and police searched icy waters for bodies. Four survivors reported.
In Chattanooga Tennessee on February 16 a spectacular blaze consumed Plant No 2 of the Columbian Iron Works, a two story building used for artillery shell production. At least one man died and was recovered from the ashes. firemen saved adjacent plants, cause and damage estimates were not released.
Louisiana highway department estimates for 1945 total construction and maintenance costs at 17 961 094 dollars with federal share of 6 633 198 dollars. 1944 expenditures reached 11 240 076 dollars including 4 873 795 for maintenance and 1 913 193 for replacements. 1945 projects hinge on WPB approval and include Calcasieu river bridge work and US 90 reconstructions between Jeanerette and New Iberia.

Miss Marilyn Kaemmerle the editor of The Flat Hat at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg Virginia was dismissed for an editorial proposing that Negroes be admitted to the college in the future. The piece suggested they would join clubs, socialize with classmates and marry among classmates.
U S Pacific Fleet reports an unprecedented carrier air raid on Tokyo with over 1500 American planes striking airfields and defenses for hours. Admiral Mitscher and Admiral Spruance lead a vast force in a 200 mile Japanese waters column while a separate task force shells Iwo Jima, aiming to weaken Japan's home air power and inch toward blockade or invasion.
Columbia, Feb 16 The mystery surrounding 26 year old Mary Lee Epes deepens as police question a secret identity woman while Lt. B. C. Epes faces murder charges. Autopsy says she was drugged and bludgeoned after a sedative overdose disputed by the officer.
Pfe. Leo T. Zingale of Cleveland received the Distinguished Service Cross for sacrificing himself to save his squad during a July attack in France. Placed on open ground by German gunners, he urged his men to fire, drawing fire away and ensuring the machine gun nest was wiped out, allowing the unit to press the assault.
Washington February 16 Southern Democrats in the House claim to hold the fate of Henry Wallace as commerce secretary with votes likely to decide Senate confirmation. Leaders say if they vote as on yesterday’s test ballot the Wallace bill advances. if enough defect, the measure could be killed and returned to the Senate. Representative Gibson Georgia says they are the balance of power. Rankin Mississippi predicts 20 to 36 votes to send the measure back to banking committee. Senator George Georgia urges backing Wallace to avoid making a martyr of him.
