Gunmen abducted Airman J. C. Jimmy Finley from the Balgat base near Ankara as he stood guard at 3:30 a.m. The truck was later found abandoned about 10 miles from the capital with no sign of Finley or the assailants.
Saigon UPI reports South Vietnamese commander Lt. Wen Muang Auan Lam says 16 000 troops penetrated up to 18 miles into Laos and halted Communist traffic on the Ho Chi Minh Trail. U.S. planes bombed CIA base in Long Chen killing 10 and wounding 20 as Meo tribesmen retook positions after a North Vietnamese attack. A Chinook helicopter was shot down but details were few.

Ten tative agreement was reached today between United Steel Workers and National Can Co to avert a strike that threatened three other major can makers. The union negotiators voted to accept a wage escalator clause. National Can employs about 4,000 workers and operates across about 175 plants nationwide. The strike had begun after talks collapsed with American Can Co Continental Can Co and Crown Cork and Seal Co, affecting roughly 31,000 workers.
Monroe native Major Ray W.
