Orbiter 3 Captures First Moon Photos for Apollo Site
Lunar Orbiter 3 returned earthbound pictures of the moon’s surface. The control center at Jet Propulsion Laboratory confirmed the initial 20 frames were excellent, showing areas near the moon’s equator and eastern edge. The three primed landing sites lie in the Sea of Tranquility and the Ocean of Fecundity as Orbiter 3 surveys for Apollo targets over an eight day span.
