Jackson Mississippi February 15. Senator Willis Matthews said he would introduce a bill to make it a crime to knowingly tell a falsehood about another person. First offense would bring a 200 to 500 dollar fine and two to six months in jail with stiffer penalties on a second conviction. The measure targets vindictive whispering and malicious gossip, with no cover for repeating statements.
J B Johnson operator of the Triangle Cafe in Monroe was arrested for firing two shots into the left front tire of Kenneth Courtwright's car after a dispute over a $3.87 bill. Johnson faced a firearms discharge charge and was held on a $50 bond. Courtwright, 41, paid his bill and left the scene.
Lake Charles La Feb 15 Officials of the Louisiana federation of labor state a strictly neutral stance in the Democratic gubernatorial campaign denying endorsements for either candidate Judge Robert Kennon faces Carlos Spaht in the runoff Roach says both candidates appeared before the federation board and were found friendly toward organized labor no endorsement recommended to the general assembly
Mayor John E. Coon declared February 17 to 24 as Brotherhood Week in Monroe urging citizens to join nationwide observance of the Brotherhood of Man under the Fatherhood of God. The proclamation cites founding ideals and condemns bigotry and communism as threats to liberty.
In Somerville Massachusetts a family of four perished in a blaze that damaged four tenement buildings. Anthony Carcarro 52 and his daughter Jeanette 2% were found in his arms. Eva Carcarro 35 and son Richard 5 died in their apartment. firefighter Richard McDevitt 47 suffered 50 percent burns. About 30 people were left homeless in freezing temperatures.
Washington AP Representative Hebert says the house armed services subcommittee will investigate why the military buys clothing by package and how pooled purchases could save billions. Witness Archibald Alexander outlined a cataloging plan to enable pooled buys, with savings noted. Three civilians praised for saving over 2.5 million dollars receive commendations.
A requiem mass for King George VI was held at 9 30 this morning at Grace Episcopal Church led by Rev. David A. Jones. The King’s body departed Westminster Abbey at 9 30 London time and was carried to St George's Chapel Windsor amid muffled drums. Father Jones noted English community support and the growing American sympathy strengthening ties between England and America.
Britain's king is laid to rest at Windsor in a somber service attended by Queen Elizabeth II and the royal family. Elizabeth, 25, rode in a horse drawn carriage to a dirge played by ten bands as crowds lined London streets. The queen shed a composed, emotional farewell, sprinkling earth on her father's coffin as it sank in St George's Chapel.
Thirteen persons were sentenced and fined in the fourth judicial district court. Judge David I. Garrett imposed six month jail terms for driving while intoxicated offenses. Names include Richard Dudley Marie Reeves J W Holley Junior Landry L R Freeland Viola Dunn McCalistar J T Mitchell Roger Tate and others with various charges and fines.
Judge David I Garrett set March 3 as the deadline for briefs in the Rayville Fuller public defamation case. The state and defense were asked to file. Paul Fink, Fuller's attorney, argued to quash the indictment in district court shortly before noon.
A Spaht McKeithen rally is set for Monroee Five Points tonight at 7. Speakers include John J. McKeithen running for lieutenant governor T A Thompson for state auditor and Congressman Otto E Passman. Ouachita parish citizens are invited to attend.

The complete Kennon Barham ticket will attend a final fifth district rally at Ouachita Parish High School auditorium tonight at 7 30 p m. Twin City supporters are expected to turnout en masse with reps from 14 parishes meeting Judge Kennon before the event.
