Memphis Feb 15 The Mississippi River held 17 bodies as salvage crews entered day five of dredging from the airliner wreckage. The craft with 24 aboard plunged Thursday night en route from Los Angeles to New York. Several officers and a civilian among the dead have been recovered along with mail baggage and personal effects. Lieutenant Linton M. Seifert of Fort Belvoir Virginia was identified among the latest bodies recovered.
General MacArthur announced a bloodless occupation of Rooke Island between New Guinea and New Britain, aided by prior take of Long Island. US air forces dropped 326 tons on Rabaul and Kavieng bases, with seven enemy interceptors shot down and three American planes lost during the strikes.
