President Ford says the public works jobs bill would create at most 250000 new jobs over several years, far less than the claimed 600000 to 800000. He plans a veto, urging Congress to pass his tax and budget proposals to spur private sector job growth and avoid inflation.
Monroe chief accountant Douglas Waynes returned from Washington and said the city should receive about $150,000 in federal urban mass transit funds this year. He, with Ouachita Council of Governments and state coordinators, met in D.C. to review the city proposal and outlined required changes and resolutions before approval, with final clearance taking 90 to 120 days after submission.

Police say 37 year old actor Sal Mineo known as The Switchblade Kid was stabbed to death outside his Hollywood apartment. Neighbors heard screams and saw a blond haired man fleeing the alley where Mineo lay fatally wounded. Mineo lived alone and had been rehearsing for P Your Cat Is Dead at the Westwood Playhouse with TV appearances on Ellery Queen and Joe Forrester.
