Washington reports that Roosevelt Churchill and Stalin announced a compromise on voting in the proposed world security organization. A San Francisco United Nations meeting is set for April 25 to prepare the charter, with France and China to be consulted on the final decision.
London February 13 AP Russian forces smash the German Bober line and push to within 70 miles of Dresden while advancing toward Sommerfeld 17 miles from a Zhukov front near Berlin. Berlin radio reports Budapest evacuation as Soviet operations press toward the Oder.
A 26 year old bride from Texas confessed to obtaining over 4600 dollars in allotment checks after marrying at least eight men across five years. She used 27 aliases and worked various jobs while under indictment in California for mail fraud. She was located in Eugene by federal agents and Oregon police and will be returned to California to face charges and an income tax probe.
Commander Charles S. Hutchings of Tallulah La is awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry off Algeria on November 6 1943 aboard the U S S Tillman. He maneuvered to avoid bombs and torpedoes then fought attackers, destroying several bombers and aiding in the preservation of troops and supplies.
Japanese forces in south Manila are hemmed in by three American divisions as Corregidor and Bataan fall under heavy bombardment. General MacArthur reports extraordinarily fierce fighting, with U S forces advancing through mined streets while limiting casualties and city damage. The Japanese garrison is increasingly compressed near the Pasig river mouth.
Fred A Mason known as Pappy Mason retires after 44 years in newspaper work, 30 as a linotype operator at the Times composing room. He plans to fish and move to a 100 acre farm near Jonesboro, sharing a long career from Farmerville to Alexandria and Vicksburg before joining the Times in 1915. He began as a reporter at the Town Talk and later worked for the Vicksburg Herald.
Brig. Gen. Frank Dorn, en route to Washington from southwest China, says Japan would like to leave Burma and other southern conquests but fight China fiercely. Dorn, once aide to Gen. Stilwell and participant in the China Burma India campaign, notes Japan favors retreat from Burma while remaining powerful in Asia.
