Washington Feb 12. Westbrook Pegler critiques taxi drivers as garrulous ignorant bores, not philosophers, questioning the public’s appetite for homely wisdom from streetwise figures. He argues readers misread drivers as Mark Twain or Whitcomb Riley and warns of overgeneralizing from mundane conversations.
In Bastrop Louisiana on February 12 a 16 year old, James Burns, was shot by an unknown man returning from a New Year party with four or five companions. Burns was struck at the base of the spine and lies in a local hospital with a bullet lodged there. Police seek the shooter’s identity as witnesses recall a car approaching and Burns stepping into the road believing the occupants to be friends. He has a fair chance for recovery.
Agnol ia Mississippi February 12 14ther Lee Cooper aged 20 was executed at 1 29 am for the slaying of his wife Nette Dunaway Cooper. State executioner T Watson who succeeded Jim Thompson on orders from Governor Paul Johnson carried out the sentence. The conviction dated to 1941 and the state supreme court upheld it despite last minute appeals.
In Pyote Texas the 19th Bombardment Group receives a nation honoring salute after two months of combat against Japan. Maj Gen Robert Olde will present four battle streamers to the unit for actions in the Philippines Java Australia the Coral Sea Milne Bay New Guinea Guadalcanal as the men prepare for new assignments.
Washington reports Chairman Donald M. Nelson warned the wartime panel that 40.006 billion dollars of guns planes tanks and ships cannot be produced this year without broad casualties to non essential industries and further rationing. He said 1,990,000 additional workers are needed at munitions plants and manpower shifts could trigger clothing rationing even if materials are available.
The U S Navy reported Japanese positions at Munda on New Georgia and Kolombangara were bombed Thursday. Marauder bombers escorted by Bell P-39s and P-38s hit Munda in the morning starting fires, and evening strikes on Kolombangara started a large fire with one enemy plane shot down.
Associated Press reports American bombers and torpedo planes sank three Japanese destroyers and damaged two more during a February strike aimed at destroying the Japanese effort to evacuate troops from Guadalu. The engagement followed attacks on 20 destroyers near New Georgia Island on February 4, with one destroyer sunk in three minutes and several Zero fighters shot down.
Bodies of three men killed in an army airplane crash near Alto are being held at Dixie Funeral Home awaiting disposition word from army sources. Public relations officers at Selman Field will not release information since the plane was not based there. The craft was said to be from Esler Field near Alexandria, but names could not be obtained. News arrived shortly after the incident but details and identities await army clearance.
Soviet forces pierce into the Donets coal basin and threaten Kharkov as General Vatutin achieves a corridor from Kamensk to Novocherkassk. The breakout secures Bogurayev and Kerchik, cutting deep into German defenses and advancing toward Rostov.
President Roosevelt will radio a 2 minute address at 9 30 pm eastern wartime covering foreign and home front developments. The speech marks his return from Casablanca and follows his January 31 trip and Churchill talks. Mrs Beatrice Houdini aged 69 died aboard a Needles California train en route to New York. She had long doubted immortality and said no one could contact her husband Harry Houdini after death. Her sister Mrs Marie Hingon accompanied her as she weighed 110 pounds and suffered from heart illness before the journey.
Major General Alexander M. Patch Jr announced the Japanese 17th Army had been totally defeated and destroyed on Guadalcanal. Allied forces, converging from west and east, closed on Japanese HQ near Cape Esperance as the island battle ended in a clear American victory.

Two 12 year old West Monroe girls, Margie Gibson of 806 North Third and Juanita Armstrong of Mill Street, were struck by a passing automobile as they walked home from school Friday noon. Gibson suffered possible internal injuries while Armstrong sustained a leg fracture. both were taken to St. Francis sanitarium by a Dixie Funeral home ambulance.
W S S Gilmore of the Detroit News told the American Society of Newspaper Editors that the free press will aid the war effort while staying vigilant against muzzling attempts. He cited the nationwide scrap drive as proof of press power and urged strict confidentiality in government briefings. He noted some editors had feared government capture at Washington.
