Hundreds of workers labored in flood water to build a five foot high sandbag ring around a river boil near Spain Street behind the downtown levee. The wall halted river flow and stopped flooding into nearby streets as engineers predicted similar past floods. Police guarded crowds as officials supervised the effort and pledged continued vigilance.
An investigation opens into the United Air Lines luxury liner from Los Angeles that plunged into San Francisco Bay killing 11. Officials examine whether occupants survived the impact, if landing gear was down, and whether wing flaps were adjusted. Autopsy on Mark Fontana notes he remained fully conscious after impact.
The Ouachita River at Monroe shows a drop of two tenths of a foot Friday morning after a crest of 45.7 feet held since Tuesday. Amelia Earhart Putnam plans a 27000 mile around the world flight starting in March to study human reactions to aviation. Captain Harry Manning will ride as navigator across the Pacific, with a route near the equator from Oakland to Honolulu and beyond.
