A large new levee at Salem raises alarm as sand boils appear nearby. officials monitor stability and warn residents of potential flooding. The development draws attention from residents and engineers assessing risk and preparedness.
Vicksburg Miss Feb 12 Sand boils behind the new Salem levee alarm officials as Major J A Woodruff engineer in charge of the Third Mississippi River District reports continued unease. With fifty men at work under Junior Engineer A W Dunn they hope to halt boils quickly while officials inspect the site aboard the government steamer Control.
Bad sub strata conditions under the Salem levee are blamed for its danger. Capt. C. O. Sherrill of the U S engineers reports water-bearing sand beneath the embankment allows seepage and sand boils on the land side. Pressure from deep water causes uplifting of earth and rapid undermining of the levee.
Capt. Sherrill thinks the danger stems from a poor foundation rather than levee construction flaws. The embankment is considered to be under great stress, with the crevasse threat persisting.
New Orleans report says Salem Levee in East Carroll Parish was surveyed by Assistant Engineer E C Follinger and a team. Most of the two mile levee looked satisfactory though 1000 feet of upper wing shows sand boils and sloughs. officials warn prolonged or repeated high water could worsen conditions unless quick remedial action is taken.
The American Refrigerator Transit Company, led by president B. F. Bush, ordered 2,000 steel under frame refrigerator cars from American Car and Foundry of St. Louis.
