The Arkansas Gazette reports over 600 homeseekers brought into and through Arkansas this week by Rock Island and Iron Mountain lines, mainly on Iron Mountain routes. Many paused at Arkansas points before continuing to Texas. Most travelers were farmers from Iowa Illinois Missouri with a few from Kansas and Oklahoma.
Hundreds of visitors watched the refloating effort as the wreck of the Maine floated free of the mud. Water was pumped into the harbor dam to raise the hull toward the harbor level, with plans to break the dam and float out the ship within a fortnight after Washington orders.
