An Akron area air base reports a trainee death from meningitis with three other trainees ill and isolated. The base restricts trainees to the facility and enacts mass formations and guard measures to curb spread while medical staff monitor the outbreak.
A petition circulated on LSU campus by dissident SLF members denounces a pro Viet Cong stance by federation officers. Governor McKeithen urges action against Albert Nelson, labeled a Communist advocating overthrow of the U.S. government, while fears of cross burnings surface near the president’s home.
U S Cavalry and air units struck Viet Cong near Bong Son 20 miles southwest of there and killed 19, captured eight. Viet Cong abandoned field telephones and wire as they fled. In Saigon another 184 Communists were reported killed, raising two week losses above 2,000. An American helicopter was shot down and a Skyraider was downed by anti aircraft fire. A civilian American engineer was killed near a quarry 20 miles northeast of Saigon amid a February kidnapping incident linked to the same firm.
Three masked men broke into the home of 80 year old Bertha Freeman and 78 year old Marie Robinson, pistol whipped Freeman, gave a pill to Robinson, bound and gagged them, and fled with 37000 cash, 3550 jewelry, and 500 in silver. The robbers warned of further killings if the women screamed.
Lt Gov Avcock and House Speaker Delone agreed to head-to-head talks Monday on legislative reapportionment with a joint study committee Wednesday. Gov. McKeithen indicated leadership with Avcock and De Jong assisting to draft a plan acceptable to both Legislature and the courts. A special session was debated but not planned. talks aimed to expedite a workable proposal.
In Morristown New Jersey business men led by 65 year old participants began a 100 mile conditioning program around Morristown High School track. Robert Freeman YMCA director says the effort has improved hearts waists and fitness with about 40 men in the current class.
Milani Ganna and Charles D Williams earned fall semester honors at Centenary College with GPAs of 3.5 and 3.9 respectively. Milanni Ganna is daughter of WS Ganna. Charles Williams is son of A Williams. Milann is a Monroe Court School Board president’s daughter. Charles is a pre law freshman planning student.
The third annual Camellia Show in the Northeast Louisiana Camellia Club region will run Saturday and Sunday at the Central Savings Bank and Trust Co. The event opens at 2 p.m. Saturday. Bloom losses from a recent freeze affect entries, with many blossoms expected from local and area greenhouses and some from southern Louisiana. Judging occurs 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday. blossoms enter 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday. show hours are 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
President Hector Garcia-Godoy named Colo Enrique Perez y Perez to lead the armed forces amid a deadly two day crisis that left nine dead. The move comes as labor and political leaders push a general strike against the army high command, while negotiations with the government continue.

The West Virginia Legislature adjourned early after approving a birth control program. The measure restricts assistance to married persons and exempts welfare workers whose religious beliefs conflict with birth control activities.
Atlanta students plan a protest rally in support of President Johnson's Vietnam policy with speakers including Emory and Agnes Scott participants. The event features shuttle buses and motorcades to Atlanta Stadium and pits pro and antiwar groups against each other.
