U.S. Advances Welfare Funding To Ease Crunched States
The U.S. plans a one time $1 billion advance on welfare payments starting June 15 to help states cover rising costs in programs for the aged blind disabled dependents and the medically needy. States may repay within 12 months by reducing monthly withdrawals or skipping a month. Twenty states and D C have cut aid levels in AFDC to manage costs while awaiting welfare reform bills.
