Saigon reports a Viet Cong assault in multiple sectors ending with a heavy loss for South Vietnamese forces. The fiercest fighting centered near Da Nang, east of Saigon, and in Binh Dinh Province as warplanes raided North Vietnam.
U S officials report two government companies wiped out and a battalion nearly destroyed in Viet Cong actions with casualties potentially around 600. Duc Phong town fell, four advisers missing, a helicopter crew killed, and a Ranger relief mission sent. Over 100 wounded Americans are to be evacuated from South Vietnam bases, with plans shifting to San Francisco and Letterman Hospital as crosswinds redirect the flight.
