The body of nine year old Harry I Metz Jr missing since December 18 was located in the Indianapolis waterworks canal after draining the canal. His father identified the body and reported a mysterious call claiming the body would be found in a chosen spot with a message from above. The search began after he did not return from a school Christmas pageant rehearsal. Gloves and a lunch box believed to be the boy’s were found near the canal on the day of his disappearance.
Adolph Hitler Mittel papa in Astoria admits his 18 day old son bears the name Adolf Hitler and says public objection prompts a possible name change. He explains the name was a joke tied to a bet and politics do not figure in it. Wife Bertha and health commissioner Dr Stebbins note the issue as a humanitarian concern.
In Winnsboro Louisiana a two year old boy named George Alien Polk fell from an auto as it crossed a ferry and plunged into the water. The Monroe fire department found the body after nearly an hour. Parents are Mr and Mrs F C Polk of Crowville. The father was inducted into the navy earlier in the week and funeral plans remain pending.
Eight miners were killed and two injured in the Mulcahy mine near Shullsburg Wisconsin after a collapse trapped workers at the 60 foot level and a second collapse entombed six rescuers from nearby diggings.

General Sir Harold Alexander announced the British Eighth Army has driven the last of Rommel's forces from Libya and is advancing into Tunisia. He said Allied air power and the three services contributed to victories in Egypt Cirenaica Libya and Tripolitania, and expected Rommel to retreat to the Mareth line while efforts to drive him out continue.
In San Francisco on February 10 77 ration officials convened to provide new shoes for an army nurse’s wedding. Lieutenant Mary O’Brien, stationed at Camp Roberts, sent maid of honor Lieutenant Sheila O’Leary for replacements. With no ration books for service members, no No. 17 sugar stamps were available, yet the ceremony proceeded.
Major General Alexander M. Patch reports Guadalcanal fully cleared of organized Japanese forces. Last resistance ended at 4:25 p.m. Guadalcanal time. Admiral Halsey and Captain Myles Browning note no definite surrender, with 1400 to 4000 enemy labeled evacuated or killed, and substantial booty taken including medical supplies.

In Pawtucket a 70 year old woman, Bridget McGovern of Central Falls, fractured her right lip after being knocked down by a surging crowd as a butter shop door opened. She cried for butter and was assisted to Memorial Hospital as store staff set aside a pound for her before quota ran out.
