An airliner with 11 aboard was found submerged in San Francisco bay near the airport after failing to clear a landing field. The plane lay on its back with limited fuselage visible, and authorities ordered a derrick and diver to the scene to recover bodies.
The scene blends politics and spectacle as Tidwell administers an oath while Lorenzo faces a charging bull. On one knee he uses a muleta to distract the beast, slips, and the crowd gasps as the bull nearly harms him before another torero diverts the animal and Lorenzo rises.
Lorenzo leaps to kill a bull and is carried off by cheering youths. Fermin Espinoza and Luis Castro join the scene as Mexico City patrons cry for Spanish masters. Spectators flock to the arena every Sunday, now standing room only.
An ex convict James G. McDonald was questioned about the abduction and murder of 10 year old Charles Mattson in Tacoma. Police say the suspect fits the kidnapper’s description and witnesses are to be confronted. Charles was found nude and stabbed, after his father sought ransom.
In Shallotte North Carolina Sheriff J A Russ appealed for federal help as a hooded night riding group called the Christians issued new threats. They warned three victims including a woman to mend their ways or face a nocturnal flogging. Flogging incidents began in 1936 with last reports in November.
Fair and continued cold with freezing in the northern sugar and trucking region. Temperatures 28 to 32 degrees near the coast tonight. Thursday shows partly cloudy skies with rising temperatures in the north and west. Gentle to moderate northeast winds along the coast. Arkansas expected to stay cold tonight with freezing temperatures, warming Thursday.

Special to The News-Star from Ruston Louisiana notes the night shift police enable taxi rides during wee hours. Two early buses from the east and west arrive at 4 20 a m and 2 40 a m, prompting police to step in when cab drivers sleep.
New Orleans reports five deaths from Mardi Gras celebrations including one by stabbing one by bullet and three from traffic. Numerous injuries follow carnival events as an automobile plunges into a ditch on the St Bernard highway. Page 7.
Dr. Tidwell was inducted as Monroe commissioner of streets and parks in a formal city hall ceremony attended by officials. The oath was given by W F Thurman after Governor Leche’s commission was read, and Tidwell pledged full cooperation with city and parish departments.
Detroit February report from Associated Press says GM and UAW bargaining group entered its second week with Governor Murphy stating little separates them. Eight men convened for their 11th session as talks focus on recognition of the United Automobile Workers as the workers’ collective bargaining agent.
The Weather Bureau forecast frost along the coast and ice across north Louisiana tonight. It predicts 38 to 42 degrees in the New Orleans area, 28 to 32 in the trucking and sugar regions, a hard freeze in north Mississippi, and 32 to 36 along the Mississippi coast.
Ouachita parish police jury plans changes to rural liquor laws after many bottle licensees sell by the drink. A committee will study the issue with the district attorney and sheriff, reporting by March. The debate centers on mixing bottle sale licenses with on premise drinking and related legal implications.
