A roof collapse at St Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church in Baltimore Maryland during mass injures thirty six people. The interior image shows the priest at the altar as debris falls and a crucifix remains amid the wreckage.
Roof collapse at St Rose of Lima in Baltimore injures 36 people including two nuns as snowbound congregation of 60 to 70 children and adults feels the roar of debris. Most taken to four hospitals with a 13 year old listed among the seriously hurt.
A severe earthquake struck Colombia causing at least 25 deaths and many injuries. The quake disrupted communications and power across major cities including Bogota, Cali, Medellin, and Pereira, with dozens trapped in elevators and buildings toppled. The epicenter was 186 miles south of Bogota in Huila and Valle.
The U S Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit agreed to review its ruling ordering public schools to desegregate all grades this fall. The full 12 judges will hear the case after requests from school boards in Louisiana and Alabama.
Five year old Robin Dean sustained burns over half her body while helping her mother heat milk for a baby brother. Firemen rushed Robin from Weiss Memorial to Cook County Hospital in a dramatic mercy mission, piloted by helicopter through waist high snow. Doctors at Cook County’s burn unit, led by Dr Emmett Sharkey, pressed intensive treatment as the girl’s condition showed fragile signs of response. The rescue required crossing seven miles of traffic clogged streets and breaking a snowbound path to Meigs Field for the helicopter transfer.

MINNEAPOLIS AP A 20 year old Vietnam veteran and former Columbia Heights High School graduate faces a life changing choice after a Viet Cong bullet near his spinal cord left limited use of his hands. Doctors at Walter Reed consider removing the bullet a gamble risking paralysis versus leaving it in place to preserve hand function. Joiner may return to Walter Reed for more tests and plans to attend college to teach high school English. His brother Brian, 22, is due to enter the Army, while their mother notes his pride in service.
London AP Kosygin said there is no prospect of war between the Soviet Union and Communist China and that Moscow will maintain relations with Peking. He noted internal strife in China, warned China to safeguard diplomats, and stressed Western security and a European trading bloc as priorities. He supported North Vietnam’s demand to halt US bombing before peace talks and urged direct US-North Vietnam talks.
AP reports light snow flurries mixed with sleet and rain fell in Fort Walton Beach and Pensacola near the Alabama line. Temperatures stayed in the high 30s with rapid ground melting while southern Florida read 75 degrees in Miami and 76 in Key West, noting a sharp temperature contrast.
Reports from Saigon indicate the lunar new year truce continued with no major breach, while U.S. and Vietnamese forces logged 114 incidents, 28 of which deemed significant. A seven hour clash near Saigon left about 120 American infantrymen with moderate casualties and two Viet Cong killed as artillery and air strikes followed.

PORT ALLEN La AP Dowries remain a tradition in St. Landry Parish where the Police Jury approved distributing annual dowries to couples married last year. Forty couples will share 85 dollars each, with funds totaling about 60 000 dollars from a legacy started 143 years ago by Julien de Lalande Poydras. Eligible couples must be married in the prior year reside in the parish at least five years and file an application with the clerk of court.
President Johnson urged lawmakers to approve 3.1 billion dollars in new foreign aid for the coming fiscal year. He warned against cutting the overseas assistance program, calling his proposal a minimum contribution to mutual security and international development. Last year Congress reduced the request by 450 million dollars. The program faces stiff opposition on Capitol Hill.
