Big crowds at Alto gather as Flaming Crater continues to draw attention while Moody Seagraves Hemler C-1 roars through casing, signaling continued performance excitement and local interest.
Reports in Monroe claimed a crater formed at Hemler C-1 and that oil was found at Alto wells, later proved false. A 2:45 p. m. Alto message said Hemler C-1 still blew through the casing as a low derrick was built to cap it. At the crater, smoke appeared heavier than previously noted since the fire began, but no oil indications were confirmed.
A massive gasser at Moody Seagraves Hemlet C1 in Richland collapsed its derrick after days of pressure. The well remains highly pressurized and may crater as sand cutting powers threaten casing. Builders plan a twenty foot derrick to install the master gate valve and control the blowout.
Edna Coll, queen of San Juan carnival, wore a gold cloth gown and led 40 attendants in cloth of gold caps to greet Col. Charles A. Lindbergh on his arrival in San Juan Porto Rico February 8. Lindbergh was designated guest of honor at the carnival hall opening in the municipal theater.
Warren Oil company officers recovered a tin box and all but five notes from a stolen paper cache. The notes, nonnegotiable, were valued around 25000 dollars. The loot included 80 dollars in cash. criminals escaped before capture despite descriptions.

The Monroe area chamber of commerce will launch a spring goodwill trip covering most of the contiguous trade region. Ten tentative plans were laid by the junior board, with Luther Reed leading a committee including W. J. Sherrouse, Barney Oakland, Leon Hammond, and C. D. Wise. The three day two night journey will be by a special train with dining car and Pullman sleepers, visiting Natchez, Winnfield, Ruston and Bastrop.
Indications from Managuan dispatches say rebel General Augusto Sandino has established himself in the rich coffee belt around Matagalpa, with American marines rushed to the area. The British consul reports the Potter coffee plantation at Matagalpa seized, prompting talks with the American minister on protection of lives and property. Additional marines have been deployed since Sunday.
B. B. Hall of Atlanta was held up and robbed of 18 dollars and 50 cents by a man described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, wearing a red sweater, blue overalls and a light cap with a scar over the left eye. The robbery occurred at 7 50 p m at the Jefferson and Walnut streets intersection, police said.
The Grand street lot fronting 28 feet 8 inches sold for 20000 dollars, equating to 845 dollars per front foot, a likely historic high for the area. S. K. Heninger, owner of the Lieber Fur Co, purchased the parcel from Mrs. Kate L. McLain and plans repairs while awaiting development. San Diego February 9 Navy air crew Lieut Fitzhugh Lee Rhea and Radioman Lee Richard Lonnergan perished when their aircraft plunged about 1,000 feet during torpedo practice off Point Loma. Destroyers searched the area with lights through the night, hoping to locate the wreckage. Rhea, born 1903 in Virginia, and Lonnergan aged 26, both resided in San Diego.
Havana Feb 9 The Pan American union sub committee failed to break a deadlock between Argentina and the United States over granting the union authority to investigate inter-American tariff applications. Hughes and Pueyrredon held firm after three hours of debate, as Argentina pushes to lower tariff barriers for commerce.
The body of an unidentified man about 60 was recovered from the water near the community house pier in Biloxi Mississippi. Officials believe drowning was accidental though friends dispute possible identity as James Clinton of Elgin. No identification found.
George J. Hassell faces the death penalty after admitting a string of killings and crimes over 20 years. He murdered his sixth wife and her nine children in 1926 and later revealed locations of other burials, including under a Whittier house. Hassell’s life included multiple marriages, desertion from the army, and enlistments in both the army and navy.

In New Orleans on February 9, Philip Campelli 25 Charlie White 20 and Peter Michelli 23 were jailed without bail in St James parish Convent after the death of Mrs Charles Simon 50 who with her husband 55 was clubbed and robbed in their Vacherie store Monday night Simon 55 is in critical condition at a local hospital and identified the assailants before dying Mrs Simon died after being beaten upon entering the room. the couple were found Tuesday morning by a friend who grew worried when the store failed to open.
