Fire damp blasts at Canadian Collieries on Vancouver Island near Cumberland and at No 4 Mine in Cumberland claim thirty lives with more than twenty others missing or dead. Rescue efforts continue as ventilation fails and gas traps workers deep in the mine.
Two of the 122 miners entombed at Phelps-Dodge mine No 1 in Dawson New Mexico walked out alive after a blast. Charles Candale a Greek and Filini Martinez a Spanish American described venturing through smoke and coal dust to reach air before rescue. Eighty plus bodies had been recovered with little hope for remaining miners.
