Ouachita parish police jury adjourned after bidding on road machinery and trucks for about 25000 dollars. Contracts will cover two motor graders a tractor a scraper and 13 trucks with trades. Captain of Detectives Frank Lannes and William Frosch said Calvin Hamel Jones 24 of Ferriday Louisiana known as Scarface held up filling stations and drive in restaurants in New Orleans early in 1938. Jones implicated two others Michael Curso 21 a gunsmith and Joseph Telotte 23 an amateur boxer. Telotte and Curso were arrested. Jones fought for questioning at his home.
Australian officials filed a cabinet report disputing Lincoln Ellsworths claim to annex 80 000 square miles in Antarctica for the United States. The report notes Australia had historic exploration rights from 1928 and suggests it would act to contest only if the United States backs Ellsworth. Australia plans further Antarctic exploration after acquiring Ellsworths ship Wyat Earp and two aircraft.
The Agriculture Department asks Congress to add surplus farm commodities to cash subsidies for AAA participants. Gifts would come from loan collateral stocks and require compliance with crop control. Proposals include raising referendum levels, earlier loan timing for wheat, and capping individual payments to 50 percent of a farm’s total.

Baton Rouge February 8. W A Cooper today appointed E Leland Richardson as general counsel for the revenue department. Richardson, 34, will pursue tax litigations for the state and retains his commission as special assistant attorney general. He previously defended Louisiana chain store tax before the US Supreme Court and gained prominence for upholding the taxing powers of the state.

The heirs say they inherited Glenwood through Charles Zerkowsky estate and foreclosed mortgage ownership. Dana and Dockery resisted with a sit down strike aided by goats prompting ongoing demurrers and procedural delays.
Indiana votes to spend 10000 in a legal fight against southern governors seeking lower freight rates. The bill passed the Senate 45 to 1 and goes to Governor M Clifton Townsend. Townsend testified at an interstate commerce hearing in Albany last year that southern rate proposals would discriminate against the north.
Mackay Radio says the freighter Maria De Larrinaga sent an S O S declaring she was sinking about 1 200 miles east of New York. The Cunard liner Aurania and the Queen Mary were alerted to assist as mid Atlantic ships contend with heavy weather.
