Voters rejected a $125000 drainage bond issue by 182 to 71 amid confusion over the project. Readings show underlying valuations of $490630 for pro bonds versus $604178 against. Mayor C C Bell said the plan was city and police jury led but not a solely West Monroe affair.
Pleas of guilty to federal prohibition act violations were entered in federal court in Covington Kentucky for the George Wiedemann Brewing Company of Newport and five company officials. The firm was fined ten thousand dollars each for Charles Wiedemann president Carl Wiedmann vice president and son of Charles plus two years in the Atlanta penitentiary for Carl Wiedmann. sentences were handed down by Judge A M J Cochran.
In Flint area, Reuben Stork's farmhouse burned late yesterday while his parents were in Flint seeking work. Emma 12, Betty 5 died in the ruins. Irving 9 died from burns today. The fire is thought caused by a kerosene explosion used to start a fire in a stove.
New Orleans February 8. Mr and Mrs Charles Simon of Vacherie St James parish were clubbed over the head with an iron bar by three robbers at their home Monday night. They lie in critical condition at Charity hospital with little hope for Mrs Simons recovery. Both suffered fractured skulls. Simon spoke of an attack by three men and a man named Kelly. Two men, one a negro, are being held by the sheriff in connection with the case. The robbers allegedly took 250 dollars. Simon runs a store at Vacherie.
East Baton Rouge deputies arrested Peter Michelli after a chase through a window in his father’s Baton Rouge home. Michelli and associates allegedly clubbed Charles Simon and his wife, robbed a Vacherie shop of about 250 dollars, leaving the couple in critical condition. Philip Campelli and Charlie White, both of Vacherie, were later arrested on possible liquor offenses linked to the crime. The hospitalized couple were found by deputies after a customer’s call. Simon named the assailants before his wife remained unconscious.
Major Barclay H. Warburton won the Palm Beach mayoral race with 482 of 653 votes as social leaders and debutantes organized an unprecedented turnout. Opponents Clifton Hoffman Eastman trailed, while Eleanor Chase and Marjorie Oelrichs helped rally voters for the Warburton ticket amid a day of brisk civic activity.
Six bandits attacked an automobile carrying about $3,000 as it entered downtown New Orleans. A fierce gun battle left no injuries. The bankroll car crew and escort exchanged fire. bandits boarded the lead car, firing through the crowd. Loot included a $500 diamond ring and $110. The thieves used a car owned by Mrs Leon Bloch, stolen earlier.
In Chicago Dr. Aaron E. Kantor reports Mrs. Gertrude Harper, 40, survived an abdominal operation after her heart stopped for five minutes. After anesthesia complications, artificial respiration and adrenaline failed, the surgeon squeezed the heart for a minute and a half through a diaphragm, restoring circulation and enabling completion of the operation.
Associated Press reports in New York that US millinery leaders urge stylish women to own a distinct hat for each occasion. At Hotel Astor a promenade displayed 150 hats, all unique, ranging from brimless to fully brimming models, under the Retail Millinery Association of America.
Senator Smith of South Carolina asked today for an inquiry into alleged manipulation of the cotton market by cotton exchanges and undue influence on Agriculture Department reports. In Port au Prince Hall the same day Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh began a 750 mile flight to Havana at 6 35 a m. In Vicksburg Mississippi a bridge contract for crossing the Mississippi River was likely to be signed in Chicago tomorrow, promoter Harry E Bovay said, with preliminary work already underway.
Imperial California February eighth report says Albatross Giant Zenith tri motor aircraft piloted by Charles Rocheville A K Peterson with Jack Reed as relief took off at 7 28 630 am to set a world endurance record. After about 45 minutes flight the craft returned with a leaking gas tank damaged on takeoff. Gas dumped into Salton Sea and the plane landed safely.
After two failures, crews renew work to tame Hemler C-1 in Richland parish near Alto as a sand and water spray erupts from the hole. A master valve failed due to fine sand, forcing plans to use a steel die connection to seal the well while the nearby Thomason A-1 gas fire continues unabated.
Dr. Joseph Leonard Gross, 65, a noted Southern Baptist leader and former vice-president of the Southern Baptist convention, died in a Houston hospital from injuries suffered in an automobile accident January 9. He arrived in Houston in 1905 after pastorates in Washington and Griffin Georgia and Selma Alabama.

Perry M. Parker, father of Marian Parker, testifies in the Hickman sanity trial in Los Angeles after paying $1,500 ransom. Parker identifies letters and telegrams, the ransom bills, and Hickman as “the man who took the money.” Prosecution rests as arguments were set for the afternoon.
A youthful couple, John Ruiz and Pearl O Connel later 16, were jailed in New Orleans after their wedding on charges of stealing an automobile. Ruiz 21 and the bride linked their marriage to a past tragedy, with Willie Dupont arrested in connection. They awaited transfer to Hammond, Louisiana for trial.
W C Salley was awarded the Selman field airplane hangar project at 11 am in the parish police jury meeting. His bid of 6124 was the lowest with specifications and included a 250 surety bond. He did not specify completion days, and jurors asked for a definite finish date. He stated he could finish the hangar in 45 days from start.
Los Angeles, Feb 8. The Hickman insanity trial moved into final stages as last witnesses testified. The six seven alienists concluded Hickman sane. A draft of Hickman's self written closing argument was entered for review but deemed a sophomoric essay. A threatening letter to the Hickman jury prompted court investigation.
The parish near the Ouachita River and Bayous DeSiard Bartholomew reports rapid levee construction progress. State engineers meet with Police Jury President Terzia Mayor Bernstein and Chamber of Commerce chief Ethridge to discuss high water protection and expect most levee work outside the city finished by April 1.
