Shanghai reports say the Cantonese army was pushed back by Pai Pashan’s forces, retreating about 200 miles from Shanghai. Hankow officials oppose Kellogg’s neutralization plan, while Eugene Chen blames British troop and naval concentration for defense needs around the foreign settlement.
Charles Brown scheduled for electrocuting at the state prison farm for the Howard D. Usher murder was granted a temporary respite as writs from Union county circuit court and the state supreme court delayed the execution. Superintendent J S Blitch at Raiford PrisonFarm had refused the writ until ordered otherwise.

Urania Lumber Company lands registered a 26 816 barrel jump in oil runs for January compared with December. December output stood at 166 992 barrels and January at 193 808, aided by old-well work and air compression. Oil on the Taylor lease rose to 750 barrels daily after improvements and the plant install. A separate suit filed in Jena by Mrs. Carrie Elam and guardians seeks recovery of Lot 14 and most of Lot 15 in 26-10-1e, alleging misrepresentation by W. P. Pendarvis and others.
The Associated Press reports Georgia and parts of Florida saw gas prices rise to one dollar for four gallons after Standard Oil of Kentucky increased by two cents per gallon yesterday. Several other companies matched the rise, while Texas Company and Pan-American kept prices at 23 cents.
Ouachita Parish police jury will vote to condemn the Missouri Pacific grade crossing at Sicard and authorize interim safeguards. They may also approve plans for a permanent overhead crossing in cooperation with the Louisiana Highway Commission and the Federal government, due to the site’s high danger and recent fatalities.
Andrew Jankowski of Toledo shot his friend and business partner Cornelius Callahan on the Bellevue club links then killed himself. Mrs Jankowski witnessed the fatal sequence as Callahan tried to intervene. Callahan survived to hospital care while Jankowski was dead on the green.
In Nicaragua the liberal forces who held Chinandega are said to have hoisted the white flag after an air raid by planes allied with President Diaz. Conservative troops reportedly retook the town and planned to test the Managua Corinto railroad to restore transport. Liberals are said to have withdrawn to nearby towns with three miles of railroad torn up.
President Coolidge withdrew the nomination of William J. Tilson for U.S. district judge in the middle district of Georgia. Tilson, serving under a recess appointment, is brother to Representative Tilson of Connecticut. Opposition cited his alleged nonresidency in the district.
Nicholas Murray Butler, president of Columbia University, predicts President Coolidge will decline to run in 1928. He argues no man should be elected to a third term and cites opposition to third terms in American politics. Butler spoke at Riverside Republican Club, noting Coolidge’s common sense and support from Republicans.
Reports from Jolo Island recount how Princess Tarhata Kiram argued with her husband Datu Tahil over a rival, triggering a clash with government forces. Sixty Moros died in the assault. Tahil fled. the princess was found exhausted and kept under semi confinement as his sedition charge looms.

Montgomery Feb warrant sworn by Charlie C McCall attorney general charges criminal libel against Frederick I Thompson publisher of the Age Herald and Mobile Register. McCall says Thompson accuses him of neglect of official duty and he will pursue arrest warrants and civil damages. The editorials reference Ku Klux Klan and a textbook price suit.
Atlanta grand jury probes alleged bath tub party at the Atlanta Co operative Club banquet January 17. Parks Rusk of the Atlanta Life weekly faces contempt charges for claiming liquor was served and a mock bath tub scene with a Black girl. Dinkler Hotel Corp and two Black waiters plus a detective are indicted on prohibition charges. perjury indictments follow.
George B. Marsh, said to be wanted in Waterloo Iowa for a one million dollar insurance swindle, was released on a 5000 dollar bond for Waterloo arraignment in federal court. He denied involvement in the sale of the Medical Life company to Insurance Loan and Investment and offered to testify. The deal was alleged to be negotiated by I. C. Lannigan and W. R. C. Kendrick, Iowa’s resigned insurance commissioner.
J R Fields alias Virgil Bace was sentenced to fifteen years in prison after pleading guilty to kidnapping the 16 month old child of his wife from a former marriage in Springville Louisiana. He had recently married a widow here and left with her child. After arrest near Alexandria authorities learned of a prior marriage to a Selma woman. Arraigned yesterday, prosecutors accepted a guilty plea without capital punishment.
Cor corporal Dick Harrington is in irons aboard the transport Chaumont en route to China via Honolulu. He stowed aboard at San Diego with a regiment to which he did not belong under military orders.
Ed Strangler Lewis, champion heavyweight wrestler, after a straight fall win over Jack O'Dell of Wyoming in Nashville, leaves for Memphis by air to fulfill an engagement in Shreveport on Wednesday night.
Rev. Dr. Harry Emerson Fosdick urges Protestants to substitute confession for psychoanalysis. He praises the Catholic confessional as an aid for treating sick souls and calls for a renaissance of evangel. Fosdick, pastor of the Park Avenue Baptist Church, frames confession as a personal therapeutic practice.
The City of Monroe introduces an ordinance to contract Burns & McDonnell Engineering Co. of Kansas City and Los Angeles for the city’s waterworks program funded by a $600,000 bond issue. After a ten day delay the measure will be adopted next Friday February 11. The firm brings 29 years of experience with 350 projects including Lake Charles and Springfield Illinois, Beaumont Texas, and a fresh survey approach for Monroe’s water system.
New Orleans February 8 The Louisiana Supreme Court refused a rehearing of the Trion Payne conservation dispute automatically removing Maj Frank T Payne and restoring Dr V Ke Irion as Conservation Commissioner. The ruling upholds Judge Mark Me Boatner who had recalled the injunction and permitted Irion to remain in office. Major Payne had seized the office after Governor Simpson named him in January 31. a temporary injunction was later recalled following court arguments.
At Yale prom festivities about 500 girls from many states attend a revival of Call Me Pet Names Dearie from 1850. The concert program lists it as a revival and highlights the musical clubs event.
