U S Cavalry and Marines with South Vietnamese troops moved into An Lao Valley near Bong Son in central Viet Nam seizing territory held by communists since 1954. The operation aimed to trap North Vietnamese regulars and Viet Cong, but by nightfall only scattered contact occurred.

An old wooden mansion converted to a rest home burned today in Bay Shore killing four residents. Fire officials initially reported casualty numbers then revised them. Two fire departments fought the blaze for over an hour as temperatures hovered around 110 degrees.
Monroe officials urged property owners to vote in the revenue bond election Tuesday to finance expansion of the water and electric systems. The plan includes a new steam turbine generator, sub stations, transmission lines, water distribution upgrades, two new water reservoirs, a new pump station, and a service center. Bonds retired from system operation, with no tax increase, and aimed at meeting demand for the next five years.
