Washington reports focus on fast approval of the farm bill to curb cotton price swings and raise agricultural income. Administration leaders say the measure mostly addresses farmers’ share with production and marketing controls, while urging an industrial counterpart to stabilize demand and jobs.
In Norfolk on Saturday night five people were found dead from carbon monoxide in a home. The victims include David O'Neal his wife and their 3 year old daughter Goldie Lloyd Hayman a roomer and Effie May Alojasin a 19 year old. The deaths were dated around 9 p.m. with a water heater cited as the source.
Rain-washed footprints and two 38 caliber bullets offered clues in the night killing of Dr. Charles H. Lee, vice-dating rector of Christchurch, who was finishing a sermon. The traces led toward the island recreation pier but vanished in tall grass. Coroner Baldwin adjourned the inquest to Tuesday.
Harvey S. Firestone head of the global rubber empire died in his sleep at his Miami Beach estate at age 69. He had shown no serious illness on an automobile outing the day before and his funeral will be held in Akron. Firestone built his business from a small Chicago start to a worldwide tire and rubber enterprise.
Secretary Hull signaled readiness to join other nations in general armament reduction while pressing Japan to disclose naval buildup beyond the 35000 ton limit. He warned of disintegrating international relations and the possible return to force as a policy tool amid reports of ships approaching 43000 to 46000 tons.
Judge David J. Garrett today ruled a taxpayers suit seeking to restrain Monroe from paying 500 for city ads to Progress Publishing of Hammond will be heard on the merits next Monday. Judge J. T. Shell recently dismissed a similar suit for lack of cause. The petition asks an injunction to halt the expenditure as an alleged illegal use of taxpayer money.
Mrs. Malcolm Douglas national auxiliary president urged peace at the close of a two day American Legion gathering in Alexandria. She urged universal service to conscript industry and manpower to end war profits. Forrest Cooper urged employing veterans. Alcee Legendre presided.
Washington February 7 Congress has completed much of the preliminary work on Roosevelt defense recommendations to prevent profiteering in time of war. A House military committee has approved one bill and predicts swift debate. A Senate finance sub committee agreed on terms of another measure likely to be offered as an amendment to the first tax bill.
In Uniontown Pennsylvania a six year old girl named Alice Harris, confined five years in a farmhouse storage room, now plays with blocks and dolls in a hospital. Doctors say with care she may recover and grow normally within a year. Justice Fred Munk schedules a Connellsville hearing for Alice’s mother Martha Harris and grandfather David Harris on neglect charges.
The defense for Paul Wright exairport manager charged with murdering his wife and John Kimmel nears completion with three to four witnesses left. Prosecutor S Ernest Roll said he will call Edith McBride and Natalie McBride as witnesses.
Anna Marie Hahn, convicted of poisoning Jacob Wagner as part of a supposed murder for profit scheme, lost her appeal in the Ohio court of appeals. Three judges ruled she had a fair trial and no prejudice occurred, with the death penalty by electric chair still set for March 10.
The Louisiana state police have launched an auto theft bureau at the Monroe station on Sterlington road. General L. F. Guerre says it will serve as a clearinghouse for information and will not usurp local police or sheriff powers. Captain R. W. Ensminger explains the bureau aligns with the department’s eight-division structure.
Wendell Forest Bowers, 20, pleaded guilty to the murder of Wilma Carpenter, a 38 year old widow, ending prior fight plans to contest the charges. The hearing will set degree of guilt and penalty without a jury as police sealed the courthouse to prevent disruption. Bowers had entered the home for robbery, drank liquor, obtained a pistol, and later admitted shooting Carpenter and assaulting Mary Griffin.
An old-model car stalled on a country road crossing near Benton Ark caused the Missouri Pacific Texan to derail after hitting the vehicle. Six were killed including engineer John Thomas Brannan of Texarkana aged 67 who had just completed 50 years of service. Seventy-seven aboard with six injured. Train damaged extensive and roadbed repairs estimated at 30 000 to 50 000 dollars.
W H Bill Newman night superintendent at Southern Advance Bag and Paper in Hodge La died when he touched high voltage wires early Sunday. He fell or leaned against a wall switchboard at shoulder height. Body sent to Columbia Miss for funeral and burial. He is survived by his wife a daughter Velda Raye and two brothers in California.
The Mississippi Supreme Court ruled that cities and counties may issue bonds to finance factories for private industry under the general welfare clause. Five justices supported the decision, noting it clears doubts about a unique 1936 industrial agreement and upholds subsidization to promote commerce. Justice Anderson criticized the ruling as a constitutional breach.
