VA checks delayed by aging computer system
About 647,000 veteran and dependent checks were delayed this month due to an outdated and overworked computer at the Veterans Administration. VA official William R. Martin said seven million checks due by Feb 1 were mailed on time, with the delays likely wrapping up earlier this week. Most affected were pension and survivor payments, ranging from five to 195 dollars for non service connected cases and 235 to 592 dollars for low income survivors. Some service connected compensation payments were involved, but GI bill checks faced no special problem.
