A 49-year-old man, Jesse James Greer, died in a two-vehicle truck collision about 10 am Friday six miles south of Monroe on Highway 165. Two of his young daughters were injured in the crash.
Finland pledged to the United States that its tankers will not carry oil or gasoline to Communist China in the future. The promise followed the Wiima voyage carrying 7,000 tons of aviation jet fuel from Romania to Red China. The State Department sought to block the shipment and gain assurances from Finland and Turkey, but results were unclear.
The dead man is Jesse James Greer of Prairie road. Injured are Doris Ann age 10 and Cynthia age 3, treated at Wright-Bender clinic with shock and lacerations. Coroner Dr J T French says death from crushed chest and fractured back. Reported collision involved Greer pickup and a southbound T S C motor freight truck driven by George Reed of Meridian, Miss. State police investigate. Greer truck crushed beneath theTS C truck.
New Orleans police form an anti gang squad to tackle teen violence with arrests of 10 youths linked to attacks on high school students. Capt. William Walker says about 15 others are being sought as the unit targets gangs including the Diamond Gang amid riverfront area violence.
The Monroe West Monroe Chamber of Commerce sports committee outlined a three fold plan for the coming nine months. Goals include bringing the Cotton States League trophy to Monroe for a opening night promotion securing two major league exhibition games and promoting youth baseball schools. Other sports projects may follow. Attendees included A L Swanson Bill Crowe A P Kitchens Sticky Steele Paul Martin Paul Manasseh Saul Adler Shep Girault George Guerriero Irving Zeidman and Gene Pettit.
Washington The perjury trial of Owen Lattimore was set for May 11 by Chief Judge Bolitha J Laws of the U S District Court. He warned the date could be delayed if defense motions take longer to resolve and noted the outcome of those motions could change the trial date. Lattimore’s attorneys plan to move for dismissal of the seven count indictment accusing the Far Eastern specialist of lying to Senate investigators during last year’s inquiry into the Institute of Pacific Relations.
Moscow reports state security police arrested four Soviet citizens on spying charges. T A Sas and S D Gurevich are named along with FE A Taratuta and K F Romanov. Pravda says they passed secrets to foreign governments and warns of diverse criminal agents.
Ouachita parish school board members voting on Friday urged the appointment of Mack Avants to be principal of West Monroe High School. The West side committee asked Superintendent W. W. Ward to approve the choice, with full board action due at the next regular meeting Wednesday.
Four people were injured in a two car collision at the Third and Brown streets intersection in Lake Providence. Three high school students and a 32 year old Elmwood resident were hurt, with one victim still semi conscious Friday morning.
Judge David J. Garrett in Fourth District Court issued stern warnings and heavy fines for driving under the influence. Sentences included five men fined or jailed, with one receiving a 12 month term, and others ordered to penalties for speeding and weapons violations. Also noted were two penitentiary terms to be served in Angola.
Col John W Carpenter of Talleulah has been appointed chief of staff for the Air Force's Research and Development Command, succeeding Brig Gen Samuel Harriss Jr. A World War II Flying Fortress pilot, he earned the Silver Star and other decorations. He attended Mississippi and Oklahoma colleges before West Point, graduating in 1939.
Oklahoma City police issued a danger alert for Leonard G. Baldwin a 29 year old suspected murderer kidnapper and auto thief believed to be driving a stolen station wagon with machine guns handguns and ammunition. A highway patrol spokesman urged the public to stay away and notify police. A Guyman service station attendant reported seeing a man matching his description speeding through the Panhandle town.
The Two Cities civic clubs distributed plastic heart boxes. Matt F. Rice noted most of Ouachita parish funding stays local to support community programs, while the rest aids Louisiana Heart Association research. Dr. Prentice Gray announced plans for civic club talks and radio spots. Mal Cooley oversees poster distribution. Checks payable to the Louisiana Heart Association and mailed to 1007 Ouachita National Bank Building, Monroe.
UP-State police will grant motorists ten days beyond Friday before stopping them for lack of a new state license plate. Lee Laycock, head of the motor vehicle division, says mail delivery will complete most tag deliveries within the grace period. The deadline for buying tags without the one dollar penalty is Friday, with truck operators having until May first. Laycock expects a record 850000 tags to be sold this year, about 100000 more than in 1952.
Seoul February reports the U S Air Force announcing a radar equipped all weather fighter capable of shooting down an enemy plane without visual sighting is now in use in Korea. The two man crew system accompanies the new aircraft as part of the air defense upgrade.
U S Secretary of State John Foster Dulles and Harold Stassen arrived in Amsterdam after an hour flight from Bonn to examine flood disaster effects in the Netherlands and discuss European defense. Dulles pledged American aid and sympathy, noting U S armed forces already supplied substantial relief as Western Europe endures its worst flood since the Middle Ages.
President Eisenhower ordered immediate suspension of all wage and salary regulations and lifted price controls on a broad range of consumer goods including meat. Officials said decontrol could come by nightfall, with many employers and workers ready to negotiate pay hikes and new price levels as backlogs in negotiated raises take effect.
The Army today issued a draft call for 53 000 men in April matching March figures. Only the Army is drafting soldiers now as the other services have halted selective service inductions.
