Memphis authorities authorize 50 officers to patrol the city armed with sub machine guns and riot guns to halt a wave of over 100 robberies in two weeks. Patrolman E W Ledbetter was shot and seriously wounded as bandits terrorized the streets. Inspector Mike Kehoe said the flying squads would cover the city tonight.
Congress approved a bill to fund a pilgrimage for gold star mothers and World War widows to visit graves in France. The measure totals 5,886,367 dollars and awaits President Hoover's signature after Senate passage.

New Orleans district attorney Eugene Stanley reopens the Pavone slaying case from last August. He asks the criminal court to exhume the body at Williams shipyard to search for a missing bullet and to test if it matches a known local gangster’s pistol.

In Denver the 19 prisoners in a county jail cell tier allowed Dominick Anarato to leave for his baby boy's burial after a self appointed panel judged his return would honor the deceased. They pooled funds and supported his departure, with a veteran inmate expressing gratitude as each man shook his hand.
Kentucky Governor Sampson asked in Frankfort for new taxes on natural gas and on malt hops and yeast used for home brew to fund free text books. He noted Tennessee gains from such taxes and supported taxing electricity from water power, with limits.
Elmer Hayes, 45, was fatally shot today in the office of James B. Lewis, counsel for sub-district 11 of the United Mine Workers of America, in what authorities deem a dispute over factional lines. Charles Tarace, legal investigator for the sub district, is jailed as the alleged killer.
