Physicians treating former Chief Justice William Howard Taft announce at 11 30 am that he is slightly better than yesterday. The bulletin says he spent a quiet night and is comfortable this morning indicating a modest improvement in his condition.
Montgomery Ward store officials from Jackson Mississippi host a convention of district store managers with attendees from Texarkana Beaumont Tyler Natchez Hope Alexandria Baton Rouge Lafayette and Monroe. Sessions run all day with a banquet to close.
The death of Dr. B. C. Chamness a wealthy Texas physician and businessman who vanished from Roscoe Texas two and a half years ago was revealed near Clarendon Arkansas. He had lived for seven years with neighbors providing food and aid while concealing his identity and practicing medicine briefly before contracting tuberculosis and dying yesterday.
A Natchez woman, Mrs Annie M Ashley, says she did not send the telegram that named Roy J Ashley as an escaped federal prisoner to U S Marshal W M Palmer in Shreveport. Ashley, a filling station operator, was arrested for a worthless check and had escaped from Caddo parish jail on May 19 1928 while a trusty prisoner.
In St Louis on February 5 merchants at the American Retailers Association convention heard J Frank Grimes of Chicago warn that chain stores threaten community profits and local life blood. He praised W K Henderson for support of independent grocers.

A man tentatively identified as D. B. Bowden of Newport was killed near Nettleton when struck by the Frisco Sunnyland passenger train. He had stopped to repair a tire on his car and may have stepped in front of the train. identification came from a key ring found in the automobile.
Two boys drifted on a large ice floe about four miles above the American Falls in the Niagara River. State police and Niagara Power Company crews rushed to deploy a tug and set up flotation lines at Goat Island to reach and save them before the floe went over the falls.

An auto driven by J. R. Rogers of West Monroe plowed into the West Monroe State Bank on Trenton street shortly after noon. The crash tore out a 12 by 12 foot front section of glass and smashed the teller’s cage, thrilling bystanders who feared a bank robbery. Wheeler was pinned by the cage as spectators watched.
