February warmth sweeps the South with Monroe recording a 82 degree Thursday high. Local observer Kate Key lists readings from February 1 through 5 including 72/41, 79/46, 82/58, 77/54 and a missing 5th day high with 57 as the low. The groundhog’s shadow is dismissed as a six week winter forecast.
Unusually warm weather across southern states for two weeks has sparked early peach blooms and swelling buds from Augusta Georgia to Mobile Alabama. Forecasters remain skeptical spring is near as the warm spell continues, with record highs in several locations and minimal freezes in Atlanta. Continued warmth expected to push trees toward full bloom if it persists.
The existence of a basement rendezvous used by nearby high school students to smoke drink and gamble was disclosed in an investigation by police and school officials. Students questioned described gambling and drinking at the place with liquor supplied by itinerant bootleggers and consumed near the school. Adults reportedly invited students to gamble to obtain their pocket money.

Urania Tullos Feb 5 Anothe r big gusher was brought in by Wingfield et al in Little Creek district. The well ran wild and was estimated to be making 4000 barrels. It bridged over and landed after hours of flow. A 6 inch casing hole was blown and the well cemented to be drilled again once the cement sets. The Pima Oil Co 2 unit air compressor is on their lease in Section 7 10 2e with No. 1 Catalina and No. 9 Pima blown. Air blasting wells shows large water content but good results.
Three people died in a dwelling house fire at the Quantico marine barracks in Virginia last night. Lieutenant R W Holderby III, Miss Elanor Griffin, and Clotilde Holderby perished. Miss Carolyne Griffin was injured and taken to hospital. Holderby’s wife and eldest daughter escaped unharmed.
Next Saturday Monroe hosts 40 to 50 editors for the North Louisiana Press Association semi annual meeting. A luncheon by the Chamber of Commerce Monroe West Monroe and The Monroe News-Star will cap the day at Hotel Virginia. Speakers include Governor O H Simpson Superintendent T H Harris and Judge Percy Sandel. Reservations via the Chamber office by phone.
Postmaster A. A. Thoman reports Monroe January postal receipts totaling $9,923.44, up from $9,133.80 in January 1926. The January takings, a typically weak month, suggest 1927 may set a new high. the rising volume supports plans for a larger federal building in the city.

New Orleans February 5 Judge Mark M Boatner refused to make permanent an injunction that barred Dr V K Irion from interfering with Maj Frank T Payne in the conservation department. The ruling says Payne appointed by Gov O H Simpson held office by force and against public welfare. The judge ordered a suspensive appeal and set bonds at 1500 dollars while arguments proceed Monday.
Jailer W. W. Curtis installed a radio on the Ouachita parish jail roof and tunes in nightly after eight. Prisoners request doors ajar so music from New York and Pittsburgh wafts through the corridors. An amplifier carries broadcasts throughout the jail while many inmates stay informed and entertained.
A New Jersey town mayor Henry Wissel his police chief and two detectives were found guilty of conspiring to aid a $2 million rum running scheme tied to the steamship Eker. They allegedly accepted about $48 000 in bribes to help land liquor with sentences due Wednesday in Atlanta federal court.
London reports fighting in Oporto as revolutionary forces try to arrest the Carmona government’s move. A suspected spread to northern Portugal is noted with a general strike affecting rail lines in the south. The revolt targets President Carmona, who assumed power after a spring military coup.
M. F. Atkins a 63 year old night watchman at Tremont Lumber Rochelle was shot by two prowlers on the mill property Tuesday night and died in a hospital in Alexandria. Atkins described two young white men as his assailants and noted the robbers took a dollar and change after rifling his pockets. Authorities have no further clues beyond the description and are watching for men matching it.

One accomplice fled. three wardens escaped unharmed.
