Death near Alto ends in gunshot death of Monroe man

Monroe resident Monroe Eugene Lyles aged 24 died from a gunshot wound to the temple near Alto. Authorities say the death was self inflicted after Lyles was arrested for drunk driving and trespassing. A note to his wife lay on his car seat beside a 41 caliber revolver. He served as a Monroe post office mail carrier and was a World War II veteran. Funeral set for Alto Baptist Church with interment at Little Creek Cemetery. Lyles leaves a wife a son and his parents and two sisters. Pallbearers named.

Vehicle License Deadline Extended To February 23

The final date for purchasing vehicle licenses has been extended from February 6 to February 23, announced by department of revenue manager C. R. Tidwell today. He noted the delay was due to late receipt of four plates slowing license issuance.

Ickes Death Mourned Across Nation

Kidnapped U S Girl In Germany Returned Safely

Frankfurt report says Mamie Ruth Shelton, 18, the first postwar American girl seized in Germany, was held in a stolen car by a gunman in U S uniform for about an hour before being found by two military police corporals near Niedernhofelden. She was not harmed, though exhausted, and reunited with her mother in Frankfurt.

Spaht Blasts Coalition in Louisiana Gubernatorial Battle

In Hessmer Avoyelles Parish Spaht attacked the Kennon coalition accusing defeated rivals of colluding in New Orleans to deliver votes. Police Probe Three Weekend Burglaries in Monroe

Monroe police investigated three burglaries reported over the weekend. C H Morgan said his garage at 303 Glenmar Street was broken into and tobacco valued at about 135 dollars was stolen. 50 cartons of cigarettes and many cans of tobacco were taken. Cliff Flack of El Paso reported a lamp worth 8 dollars stolen from his truck at the Tow er Grill while he visited the restaurant. Howard Griggs of Choudrant said his room at the Earle Hotel was burgled with a watch valued at 105 dollars taken.

Paratyphoid Case Suspected in Ouachita Parish

Dr W C Summer reports one suspected paratyphoid B case in Ouachita Parish with possible additional cases under physician care. A schoolchild ill about six weeks, hospitalized, now home and eating well. Blood tests planned to confirm diagnosis.

Three Autos Involved In Monroe Crash

Three automobiles were in a minor crash five miles north of Monroe on U S Highway 165 shortly before 4 30 p m Sunday. No one was injured and only minor damage was reported. Participants identified as Royce Adkison 19 Red Bay Alabama Simmis P Sims 23 Route 2 West Monroe and F A Butzine Barksdale Field. Butzine stopped to turn onto Black Bayou road and was struck from behind by the other two vehicles.

Shortage Of Blood Donors Reported In Monroe Area

Mrs. Toni Veazey announced that the blood mobile in Monroe for February 5 6 and 7 is woefully short of donors. The Twin Cities quota is 350 pints with 50 more needed in Monroe proper 60 in West Monroe and 25 in the college area. She urged citizens to cooperate and those unregistered to contact the Red Cross office.

Armistice prospects cited in Korea talks and Lovett on defense budget

In Munsan Korea Brig Gen William P Nuckols said staff officers have moved closer to an armistice with Communist acceptance of immediate negotiations on the final section. In Washington Defense Secretary Lovett urged no drastic cuts beyond the 52 billion dollar defense program for fiscal 1953 warning it would degrade operations and hinder major item production. Truce negotiators plan a full dress session Wednesday to tackle troop rotation while an Allied subcommittee member expressed optimism on completing the prisoner exchange agreement.
