General Troy H. Middleton, LSU president, asked the state’s alumni to back an $18 million expansion from the next legislative session. He warned programs could be cut if funding fails and noted LSU’s postwar growth across facilities, graduate studies, and enrollment.
About 200 pilgrims were killed and at least 1,000 injured when a stampede swept a crowd of up to three million at Allahabad during the Kumbh Mela at the confluence of the Ganges and Jumna rivers. Prime Minister Nehru was to visit. officials gave no casualty figure. The festival runs January 14 to March 4 every 12 years.

Survived by wife Robbie Lee Robinson four children a brother Dr C S McConnell Baton Rouge and sister Mrs Douglas Booth Mangham.

A $3,000 reward is offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person who shot and killed Dr. H. O. Taylor of Calhoun. He was killed while deer hunting in Ward 3, Concordia Parish, on Cocodrie Bayou near Deer Mound. The reward comes from Dr. Taylor’s son H. O. Taylor Jr. of West Monroe, with contact somehow through local sheriff offices in Vidalia or Monroe.
