Local clubs announce events at Lakeside Country Club and various churches with bridge evenings and meetings. Public theater at the Quachita parish court house screens The Trial of Mary Dugan, while individuals host luncheons and garden club discussions.

Rafael Sabatini’s romance of seventeenth century sea pirates arrives at the Paramount as a First National release. Cosmopolitan Productions presents an elaborate production with massive period ships and detailed sets including Port Royal and Port Royal scenes, King James I palace and governor’s mansion.
Olivia de Havilland headlines a large cast with Lionel Atwill Basil Rathbone and others in a scene filled with the glamorous big time players. Warner Oland stars in Charlie Chan's Secret at the Capitol theater. Chan hunts a missing heir in a murder mystery crossing shipwreck San Francisco and a spiritualist seance. The family all share motives as the detective reenacts the crime to trap the killer.
Italian tenor Nino Martini and Genevieve Tobin star in Here's to Romance a music filled comedy film making Martini's screen debut. The Capitol theater will show the picture this Tuesday and Wednesday.
The district mission rally at First Baptist Church in Monroe will run Thursday with sessions at 10 a.m 2 p.m and 7 30 p.m Speaker lineup includes Joe Burton Otis Thompson C B Maddry Frank Tripp W W Hamilton and R S Jones A large attendance is expected and attendees are asked to bring sandwich lunches while the church ladies provide hot coffee and tea
J. E. Phillips 77 died of heart failure. Funeral services were led by Rev. Dan Barr and burial followed in Weldon Cemetery. Survived by widow two sons Grady Phillips of Smackover Ark and O Phillips of Bernice and two daughters Miss Maud Phillips and Mrs Gladys Steward of Bernice.
Mrs. Clara Spruell, 74, died Sunday at her brother J D Galloway’s home near Fondale. Funeral followed at the house with interment in Faulk’s cemetery. She is survived by a son Archie and five grandchildren.
Judt Hurt fifty of Eros died Friday at a local hospital. The funeral was Sunday at Douglas church with interment in the adjacent cemetery. He was born in Edwardsville Alabama and lived most of his life in Eros. A carpenter by trade, ill health ended his work years ago. He was unmarried and survived by two sisters Mrs Decia Davis of Eros and Mrs Bertha Horton of Anniston Alabama, one brother Homer Hurt of Mississippi, two nieces Mrs Thomas Breard of Monroe and Mrs Duke Hendrix of Shreveport, and one nephew W H Boots Davis of Monroe.
William Pedegon 68 a farmer living near Girard died Sunday in a local hospital. He is survived by his widow and other relatives. The funeral and interment were held Monday at Acre cemetery in Union parish.
Mrs George BE Taylor 37 of the Dixie Overland highway west of West Monroe died Saturday in a Monroe hospital after a lingering illness. She is survived by her husband and her mother Mrs C J Smith. The body was sent to Demopolis Alabama for funeral and interment Tuesday.
Barbara Alice Faust aged three months died early Monday at the home of her parents Mr and Mrs J N Faust near West Monroe. Funeral is set for Tuesday with interment in Hasley cemetery. Final arrangements were incomplete at Monday noon.
