Nixon Seeks Congress Action to Curb Transportation Strikes

President Nixon urged Congress to pass a permanent law to curb crippling strikes in transportation. He cited the 117 day West Coast dock strike causing over 600 million dollars in export losses and proposed a three member arbitration to end the strike within 18 to 24 months. Washington AP reports the 1973 draft lottery assigned numbers to 19 year olds starting with March 6, 1953 births as No 1 in the sequence. The process began with Sept 26 births holding No 29 and included capsules marking Oct 11 births as No 319 and Nov 24 with red capsule No 180.

British Embassy Stormed and Burned by Ireland Mob

In Dublin thousands of republican demonstrators stormed and burned the British Embassy in Merrion Square after Londonderry funerals for 13 Bloody Sunday victims. A mob of about 25 000 hurled gasoline bombs, breached police, set walls ablaze, and raised the Irish tricolor while burning three effigies of Prime Minister Edward Heath.

Temperatures in the Twin Cities will drop tonight and tomorrow with highs in the upper 50s today and mid 30s Thursday. Winds shift from southerly to northerly up to 30 mph, with 30 percent rain chances today and tonight. FAA Selman Field reported 47 high and 43 low with no precipitation Tuesday, and Friday to Sunday outlook calls for cold, clear to partly cloudy skies.

Edwards Declares Clear statewide mandate after win

Gov elect Edwin Edwards said his victory over David Treen gives a clear statewide mandate and plans to work with Gov McKeithen on a budget. Unofficial returns show Edwards leading by large margins in Jefferson and Orleans parishes, with North Louisiana closer for Treen.

Treen Fails To Win Louisiana Governor Seat In Tuesday Vote

David Treen of Metairie falls short in his bid to become Louisiana’s first Republican governor since Reconstruction, but wins a record 42.1 percent of the statewide vote aided by Northeast Louisiana. He carried 69,532 votes in the region to Edwards’ 51,094 amid a 71.42 percent Ouachita Parish turnout. Edwards sweeps most of the region’s black precincts while Treen wins several northern parishes. Other results show James E. Fitzmorris leading in the eastern area, with Wil liam J. Guste Jr. carrying all 16 parishes in his district. Michot defeats Frye for state superintendent. Bernard leads in 15 parishes for insurance commissioner. Fowler wins Voting Machines custodian post. Christianes and Arnaud trail in remainder.
