Sen. David Gambrell of Georgia introduces his 7 year old daughter Mary to Sen. Herman Talmadge at the Capitol in Washington. Gambrell was named to fill the late Richard Russell seat and was sworn in during today’s Senate session.
Defense Secretary Melvin R. Laird told the Senate that reducing draft calls to zero by mid-1973 would be difficult but possible with congressional and public support. He urged extending induction authority beyond June 30 and cited Army shortages without the draft, noting a 1970 induction of 163,500 as the smallest since 1964.
About 10,000 white collar workers walked out at Chrysler Corp. Tuesday. a contract agreement with UAW negotiators was reported reached three hours later. Details were not disclosed but the raise was believed to mirror Ford and General Motors 13 percent increases and to be retroactive to Nov 2, 1970. UAW President Leonard Woodcock said strikers would report to work at irregular times Wednesday after 27 hours of bargaining.
