Ouachita parish police jury unanimously approves a resolution urging Gov. O K Allen to call an election at once to elect a district attorney for the fourth judicial district to succeed David I Garrett. The move aims to avoid appellate costs if the spring term begins before the election.
Denver M. Wright, a St. Louis manufacturer and synthetic tiger hunter, said he will accept Mississippi’s invitation to hunt panthers near Saucier. Hunter Kimball, conservation rector, will extend the invitation once plans are complete. Wright recently released circus lions on a Mississippi River island amid reports of panther depredations and a farmer’s claim of his child almost being seized.

A early Thursday fire in West Monroe destroyed the unoccupied frame residence at 409 Natchitoches Street owned by J. L. Russ, with about 2500 dollars in loss and partial insurance. The adjacent West Side Printing brick building suffered a damaged roof and water intrusion. a linotype machine and a cylinder press were wet but the total loss was limited. Origin of the blaze remains undetermined.
Colonel Frank P. Stubbs sixty prominent citizen died at his Riverside drive home Tuesday. A large Ouachita parish funeral included military and Masonic rites with services at his residence and at First Presbyterian church. The service featured pastors from four Monroe churches and an elder of the Presbyterian church. Floral tributes came from diverse friends and he held an elder role at the church.
Washington Feb 2 A determination to clamp a lid on debate and cut federal appropriations with a sharper knife was evident as the Senate showed that virtually nothing besides supply bills would pass before March 4. Negotiations were in progress to limit debate on all appropriation bills and general agreement was predicted. LaFollette urged day and night sessions and a systematic program for money bills and unemployment relief and prohibition repeal.
Frederick G. Bonfils publisher of the Denver Post died at his Denver home Thursday morning after several days of illness. He underwent a minor ear operation last Saturday. He was 72 years old.
Four burglaries in Monroe and West Monroe were reported Thursday to police and the sheriff's department. Stolen actions occurred at the ice plant of the American Service Company at DeSiard and Congo, North Side Pharmacy at 402 Stubbs Avenue, the Illinois Central railroad depot in West Monroe, and the W. J. Mullen filling station at the intersection of Coleman Avenue and Trenton Street in West Monroe. Sheriff Milton Coverdale and a deputy investigated the two West Monroe cases and offered a $25 reward for information leading to arrests and convictions.
Mansfield Louisiana February 2 two prisoners Jesse and W E Walker sawed from cells and escaped through a jail window with a stolen car. Huey Dykes also escaped through bars after contacting Sheriff McFatter who later returned to jail. The pair faced charges for car theft and are linked to robberies in Pelican and Mansfield. a woman was arrested with them and remains jailed.

Liberty Texas February reports indictments show seven men and two women linked to Texas and Louisiana bank robbery gang. Women, called brains of the outfit, allegedly directed more than a dozen robberies and four jail breaks over three years. Private Investigator Norman York identified the pair as leaders and connected them to two bank raids in Louisiana and Texas.
Senator Robert B. Howell arrives in New Orleans from Washington to chair hearings on the Overton Broussard senatorial contest. He meets with counsel Samuel Ansell and investigator John Holland before others join the panel. The committee, with members Carey Townsend Bratton absent due to duties, will hear witnesses for Overton and others. Huey Long plans to appear as Overton counsel.
Beverly Hills voice argues RR loans to railroads and banks benefited New York lenders. Writer contends funds went uphill, not to relief of ordinary people, comparing money flow to water that moistens everything as it descends, while gold rises. Letter emphasizes distrust of federal plan.
Washington reports the 1933 fiscal year opened with a deficit of 1,271,721,031 as receipts total 1,138,505,910 and outlays reach 2,410,226,941. Public debt rises to 20,801,707,134 on January 31, with income tax down sharply from a year earlier but miscellaneous internal revenue up. Customs duties fall to 156,003.
In Spencer Okla a 50 year old village blacksmith Jim Doyle shot and killed one of four burglars as they emerged from the Spencer State Bank. The other three escaped after his shotgun jammed. Doyle who lived next door woke to burglars prying the door and built a boiler steel barricade before firing. The slain man was about 38 years old and authorities sought identification. The robbers took only about $20 from a cash drawer after bypassing the safe with blows from torches.
President elect Roosevelt outlined a vast test project to create 200000 jobs in the Tennessee Valley. The plan envisages reforestation flood control basins water power and land reclamation across several states with aims to rebalance population and end unemployment. The program would expand nationwide from Allegany to the Pacific Coast and seeks to end unemployment through government led development.
New Orleans February report says the Orleans parish grand jury made no findings on fraud charges tied to the November 8 adoption of 15 state constitutional amendments. The body adjourned after an all day session counting ballots in four precincts. Attorney General Porterie noted the jury requested a statement but Judge Henriques ruled it inadmissible. The AG had superseded the district attorney during the probe over bonds sold after the election.
Oklahoma City February 2 Witness Philip Flaxman from Sayre says his life was threatened after agreeing to testify in the state senate proration inquiry. He described a supposed $100000 plot to break probation and said threats reached him last weekend. Officers widened the search for other witnesses as authorities used radio appeals to locate E C Duncan and other named participants. Col Cicero S Murray seeks charges against two young women who testified they saw him receive money, while county attorney Lewis R Morris keeps a hands off stance until the inquiry ends.
