Peace reigned at the Orleans parish courthouse as officials shift from militarism to administration. Major Frank T. Payne, newly named commissioner, leads efforts to audit finances and mobilize workers with about $60,000 remaining to operate.
Chicago reports show a four to six man gang armed with submachine guns terrorizing bookmakers. The latest daylight raid at a crowded handbook establishment netted about 10 000 dollars as robbers blocked exits, commanded patrons to lie down, and escaped. Police protection remains risky for gamblers.

Governor Simpson calls a meeting in the Senate chamber tomorrow to seek farm relief action. Parish delegates include Charles Phillips Col Frank Stubbs H C Cole J A Smith C C Bell D Y Smith Robert Harmon named by state legislators and T E Flournoy Travis Oliver C E Faulk W L Ethridge D F Walker by the Chamber of Commerce. The chamber opposes artificial farm finance schemes but supports relief through normal banking channels. The conference aims to craft an immediate relief plan and consider long term agricultural welfare measures.
In White Plains the final hearing of the 52 year old realty operator and his 16 year old wife Peaches closed amid testimony about love notes tying a red bow and alleged cruelties. Justice Seeger presided as attorneys prepare briefs in three weeks. Browning exited to cheers followed by police guards, while witnesses supported his claimed kindness and affectionate nature.

In Cleveland Colorado on February 2 Anton Lissecka, 38, was hacked to death by his wife Anna, 36, and daughter Elizabeth, 12, who said they feared he would kill them. Anna said she struck first with an axe and Elizabeth aided with a hatchet. They surrendered to police with four children present.

Mrs. Gertrude Solice a former teacher from Natchitoches and Coushatta pleaded guilty to four counts of sending worthless checks through the mail to order goods. Judge Ben C Dawkins fined $100 on one count with no sentence on the others citing her ill nine-year-old daughter. The incidents involved mail order houses in Natchitoches Coushatta and Campti.
John W. Prentice testified that Henry and Edsel Ford refused a one billion dollar cash offer for Ford Motor Co in the past 30 days and on two earlier occasions in 1924 and 1925. The testimony occurred during renewed hearings on a treasury tax assessment of thirty million dollars on stock sales. Prentice noted Ford’s rapid progress since 1916 and cited the panic years of 1907 and 1908 when Ford shares rose despite broader declines.
M S Atkins a 30 year old night watchman at Tremont Lumber in Rochelle was shot in the side by two white men who fled after taking less than a dollar. He was hospitalized at Baptist in Alexandria. Neighbors aided him after the 1:30 a.m. incident.
New York reports the $7 million granite Clark mansion at Seventy Seventh Street and Fifth Avenue will be razed within a month. Anthony Campagna buys the site for under $3 million for a 12 story cooperative with suites up to $350,000 each. The Clark dwelling, famed as a Montana copper king home, features 159 rooms, 31 baths, art galleries, hidden garage, swimming pool and multiple dining rooms, and will be replaced by a massive new structure with 13 to 18 room suites priced around $20,000 per room.
In Woodruff and Prairie counties rescue efforts continued as more than 2,000 flood refugees received care from state and local agencies. Cotton Plant housed 1,500 refugees as Governor Martineau ordered military aid for shelter and food. One fatality was reported, Harold Summers, 22, who drowned.
