Madrid dispatch reports the largest civil war battle outside Teruel with over 200000 insurgent and government troops and 20 planes. The clash features new tanks, artillery and aircraft as government lines on the right and center hold under heavy pressure while the left yields some positions.
In Wynne Arkansas two women died and a boy was badly burned when a boy tossed a twisted wire over a live power line. The victims were Mrs Jesse Perry 48 and Mrs Mary Capshaw 41 Augusta Ark. The boy Guy Perry was in serious condition and Emmett Capshaw 12 son of the second victim helped slash the charged wire with an axe to stop the danger.
Mexico's foreign controlled oil industry with 16 British and American companies told 13,000 employees that wage increases ordered by a government arbitration board would not be paid. The dispute could prompt government intervention or expropriation, with annual cost to firms estimated between 7 and 11.2 million dollars.

Elmer Major, 25, a local resident, was seriously wounded by Police Officer C. W. Platt after failing to halt during a cruiser pursuit near Oak and Eleventh streets. Major was shot in the back as he fled, later collapsing and being taken to St. Francis sanitarium. the incident involved Captain S. Pettit.
Shelby N. Rogers thirty five year old New Orleans truck driver died suddenly today in a Pineville rooming house where he was stopping. His brother in law T W Duckworth took the body to New Orleans. He is survived by his widow and five children.
Washington December 31 The upcoming congressional session will feature a showdown over President Roosevelt s requests for major legislation. He plans to deliver the annual message in person and submit the budget early in the week. A relief program may be delayed to March for an updated economic survey.
Louisiana highway commission to advertise for bids January 5 on two blocks of state highway bonds totaling 5 million dollars. One million funds road and bridge work on the Mandeville New Orleans road from automobile license taxes. four million secured by the four cent gasoline tax under a 1936 constitutional amendment.
Dr B J Luyet of St Louis University announced at aaAS meeting in Indianapolis that he produced an ultra frozen state in plants and small animals by cooling to hundreds of degrees below zero in a fraction of a second. Life processes halt but revive after warming.
Ouachita Parish voters must obtain poll book receipts tonight to be eligible for 1938 and 1939 elections. The tax collector and auxiliary offices in the Ouachita parish courthouse stay open until midnight to issue receipts, with about 3,000 voters still lacking them. The parish voting strength is around 16,400 from last year’s receipts.
The Leesburg Citizen advertises a $10,000 prize for the first quintuplets born within eight miles of Leesburg during 1938. The ad proclaims America first and urges Leesburg onward in the same page.
The Social Security program begins unemployment insurance in January in 21 states and the District of Columbia. The act of 1935 laid out unemployment, old age pensions, maternity and child aid, aid for the blind, public health expansion, and vocational rehab. Only unemployment and old age benefits begin now, with Wisconsin already operating such a program.
New York film critics select The Life of Emile Zola Warner Brothers as the top motion picture of 1937. Paul Muni is named best actor. Greta Garbo cited for Camille as best actress.
Six survivors recount a strangling cruise where Dwight Faulding is killed and Jack Morgan is said to have ruled with terror aboard the schooner yacht Aafje. Morgan and Faulding die, while others are held in custody as investigators piece together a high seas murder and piracy tale.
R Johnson director of the state hospital board announces medical and dental advisory committees to aid technical issues in hospitalization programs and mobile health units. Dr James T Nix of Orleans Parish Medical Society chairs the medical group with Dr Rigney D AUSTON vice chair. Dentists Dr Jall Le Blanc chairs with Dr L P Saville as vice chair.
Washington dispatch reports the engagement of Susanna Wilson daughter of Secretary Perkins to David Meredith Hare of New York City and Colorado Springs Colorado. Hare son of Mrs Meredith Hare and the late Mr Hare is Bard College alumnus at Annandale on Hudson and works in color photography. Miss Wilson daughter of Paul Wilson of New York attended Bryn Mawr College.
