Madrid reports that authorized Spanish sources flatly deny recognizing Benito Mussolini's new Italian government. They state General Franco's regime has no intention of recognizing the Italian puppet government, despite a Berlin broadcast claim based on a Rome dispatch.
Dennis Murphree was sworn in as Mississippi's 47th governor by Chief Justice Sidney Smith in Jackson. The brief term lasts 19 days with about 50 people in attendance at the ceremony in the governor's office. Mrs. Murphree and their daughter Imogene witnessed the oath.
Two American navy fliers spotted a Nazi destroyer flotilla in the Bay of Biscay and shadowed it for six hours guiding British warships to sink three destroyers. The plane also reported that British cruisers engaged the flotilla and that one German blockade runner was crippled and sunk after a Mon day air strike.
A head-on crash five miles west of Wilmer left bus operator James T. Smith of Louisville, Miss dead. Three passengers injured went to Mobile City Hospital, and the heavily loaded Raseline truck from a Mobile oil firm caused the highway blockage on state highway 42. The truck driver, unnamed, sought treatment at Lucedale, Miss.
New Orleans reports a record 14,732 births in 1943, up 2 percent from 1942. Deaths rose to 7,808, and marriages increased 15 percent to 7,520. Births averaged 1,227 per month, including 120 pairs of twins, per city health director Dr. John M. Whitney.
Admiral King says plans are ready to shift full UN strength to the war against Japan probably in 1944. He expects Germany’s defeat that year and notes studios have studied moving power from Europe to the Pacific as Germany falls. The navy chief says main attack lines on Japan are prepared for the shift.

American marines advancing on Cape Gloucester New Britain use flame throwers and artillery to clear Japanese pillboxes near the airfield while eastern and western flanks contend with organized resistance. Major General Rupertus reports 200 Japanese deaths in a failed river crossing. Allied air and sea raids hit Rabaul and Bougainville as operations extend in Arawe and along the Huon peninsula.
Betty Sue Ragan and Martha Cogswell died in a blaze at the Chopin plantation home of H M Cogswell near Natchitoches Louisiana. The fire broke out early Thursday morning trapping guests including Muss Ragan who survived with others after fleeing in night clothes. Fire department could not save the house known as the Big House and exposure affected all victims and survivors.
Washington December 30 President Roosevelt again stayed from his offices due to a head cold. Officials reported no fever and no appointments. Aides said he did a good deal of work yesterday and would likely do so again today.
American Eighth Air Force heavy bombers escorted by Allied fighters attacked military objectives in northern France as part of an intensifying daylight offensive. The raid followed a large Royal Air Force assault on Berlin and aimed at German cities including Stuttgart Mannheim and Frankfurt amid a broad daylong campaign against continental installations.
Senator John H. Overton accompanied by W S OShee and Richard Sadler of Alexandria spent hours in Monroe at Hotel Frances. He announced a favorable U S engineer report on flood control in the Mississippi valley, urging a new survey and continued hearings on a major program to protect northeast Louisiana and southeast Arkansas. He plans to return home later Thursday.
New York Governor Thomas E. Dewey postponed the electrocutions of Louise Lepke Buchalter Louis Capone and Emanuel Weiss for the fourth time citing President Roosevelt’s failure to surrender Buchalter to New York. The executions were moved from the week of January 4 to the week of February 7.
