Poison liquor deaths rise as New York reports nine victims

Police and prohibition officials hunt the source of toxic holiday liquor after nine deaths in six days. Victims include a 50 year old woman found on East 35th Street, a 14 year old boy, and a Brooklyn salesman among others. Wood alcohol cited. deaths connect to Christmas tide widespread foe. Two more bank killings by bandits also reported as crime surge continues.

Vast Northeast Louisiana oil drilling push to begin early year

A broad program to drill for oil launches early next year across Ouachita Morehouse and Union parishes near the Monroe gas field. Atlas Oil and Hanson Syndicate lead deep tests, with multiple companies planning to resume or start drilling across 25 miles of potential mother oil pool in Ouachita and adjacent parishes.

Daigre to Lead Ouachita Parish Highway Campaign

Homer man Daigre, named Ouachita parish highway engineer, will report in Monroe on January 1 to oversee a million-dollar road building drive. The plan includes a 25 to 30 mile Claiborne parish link and a 35 mile oil field route from State Line through Haynesville and Homer toward Arcadia.

Daring Broadway Hold Up and Army Theft Reported

A crowd at a Broadway restaurant on 41st street was robbed of 16 dollars after a running gun fight with police and the robbers fled in a taxi. In Brooklyn, army intelligence officers seized 1 million dollars in Army supplies and arrested three civilian workers on smuggling charges. Staten Island saw a drug store robbed near Stapleton and a grocery store safe attempt, with nine men later arrested.

Big Ceremonial Planned By El Miro Temple February 1

El Miro Temple No. 187 of the Dramatic Order of Knights of Khorassan set a February 1 ceremony in Monroe. Imperial Prince Gus Meese of Spokane will address attendees. Events include a 2 30 pm parade, 6 30 pm ceremony, and 9 pm banquet and reception. Officers elected for the new year include Royal Vizier Charles Garvey and other officers.

Poll Tax Receipts in Ouachita Fall Short of Last Year

In Ouachita Parish a sharp drop in poll tax receipts this year concerns officials as books close at midnight Saturday. Sheriff Arthur Grant reports about 2,300 total receipts so far, vs 2,800 for men last year. officials expect a possible 3,600 with both sexes counted, though likelihood is slim. Deputy Milton Coverdale will stay at the sheriff’s office until midnight to accept late payments.

Birmingham Police Aid County in Probe of Masked Assault

Police and county solicitor officers joined forces to trace the assailants who whipped Birmingham lawyer W. E. Jumlin on Tuesday night. Jumlin was lured to a lonely spot in the Red mountains where the attack occurred.

Parker appoints highway office head in Louisiana

Baton Rouge reports Parker will appoint the state highway office head after a conference with Wilson Peterman. Burris of Alexandria and Duncan Bale, state highway engineer, are named as probable appointees.

Monroe Police Seize Large Moonshine Operation

Monroe police with warrants raided George Johnson near the stave factory and Christine Wintherly’s home, recovering a full moonshine setup. Officers found a furnace, twenty two barrels of mash, three stoves, fermenting mash, seventy five pounds of sugar, jugs and other materials and destroyed the plant. The arrests followed Charles Spangler’s seizure with two pints of whiskey and Johnson’s stash including thirty six pints plus jugs and bottles. Chief Heap calls it the department’s largest raid in two years and a major blow to local liquor supply.

Lock Jaw Toll Rising From Christmas Toy Pistol Incident

Lenoris Calloway ten years old died at St. Francis Sanitarium at 3 30 this morning from tetanus tied to a toy pistol injury on Christmas day. The boy was burned when a cartridge exploded, then convulsions began and he weakened until death. Dan Hamilton twelve years old is dying at the same sanitarium from tetanus after a Christmas day toy pistol injury.

Trustees Removal Announced by Board

Boston December 50 The Board of Directors of the First Church of Christ Scientist announced the removal of the Board of Trustees of the Christian Science Publishing Society and the trustees. They said the resignations had been offered to the supreme court and placed jurisdiction solely in the court's hands.

Fernandez Heads Texas Louisiana Traffic Shippers for Rate Cut

President H. J. Fernandez of the Southwestern Industrial Traffic League returned from Dallas where a meeting named a committee to go to Washington and press the Interstate Commerce Commission for freight-rate reductions. Attorney R. C. Fullbright reported the railroads oppose cuts except on certain commodities. The committee will present the shippers' case starting January 11, with a two traffic managers and the attorney handling proceedings over about six weeks.
