UPI reports Truman dies at 88 after a 22 day struggle. President Nixon orders 30 days of national mourning and half staff. Tributes come from Johnson Brandt and others as Truman is laid to rest in Independence Missouri with funeral planned for Thursday.
U S B52 bombers and fighter bombers renewed attacks on Hanoi and Haiphong in North Vietnam after a 36 hour Christmas pause, with strikes also resuming in South Vietnam at dusk following a 24 hour cease fire. The halt over North Vietnam extended beyond the South measure, while no comment was given on Laos operations.
President Nixon spent Christmas at his Florida home while U S bombing of North Vietnam remained paused. Officials gave no public comment on operations as Kissinger and Tho pursued Paris talks. Saigon reported an hour by hour extension of the North strike pause. Nixon cruised Biscayne Bay aboard C G Rebozos boat and hosted a holiday dinner with friends and aides.
C Solon King 71 of 404 Parkwood Ave West Monroe died Monday night at St Francis Hospital after a long illness. He was a retired supervisor of music in Ouachita Parish Schools and first band director for West Monroe High School. Funeral Thursday 10 am at Kilpatrick West Monroe chapel. Burial in a family cemetery. He was Louisville Miss native, LSU graduate with BA in Music and MA from LSU School of Education. He directed University High School Band during LSU studies. Survived by wife Eleanor Maxwell King and several relatives.
