J B Harper 56 former Monroe resident and Lennon Motor Co service manager died after a short illness in a sanitarium York Pa. He lived in York six to seven years with family. Funeral services will be held there. He was native of Monticello Ark and survived by widow Mary Harper daughter Mary Bernard Shoemaker two grandchildren brother T H Ted Harper West Monroe and sisters Fay Brann Monticello and L S McFadden Kennett Mo.
In Los Angeles a Superior Court jury weighs whether L Ewing Scott should face the gas chamber or life in prison for the 1955 disappearance and presumed murder of his wife Evelyn. Scott, 61, was convicted of first degree murder after an 11 week trial, with her body never found. Under a newer California law the seven men and five women jury will determine the sentence.
Joseph H. Penix Jr. night telegraph editor of the Jackson Clarion-Ledger shot himself to death yesterday. A coroner's jury ruled the death as death by own action. no note was found. The 40 year old newspaperman, in ill health, was a WWII bomber navigator with the Eighth Air Force. He is survived by his mother, his widow and two stepchildren.
RUNAWAY BAY Jamaica seven people were killed and 43 hospitalized when gasoline spilled from a wrecked 1500 gallon tank truck exploded as locals scooped fuel into cans. Police said a scavenger fire caused the blast which burned for two hours after the truck plowed into a stone wall on the highway. Some injured slipped on gasoline and were trapped in flames.
